2014 Easton MAKO Youth Baseball Bat: YB14MK review by Fortheloveofthegame
Pros: The Mako feels more end loaded like the XL1. It virtually feels just like the XL1 but 1 ounce lighter. When my son hit both the Mako and XL1 on the sweet spot, the XL1 flew farther. My recommendation is that if you are strong enough to swing the XL1, get the XL1. If you need your bat a little lighter get the Mako or XL2 or XL3 to save some dough. If you need more swing speed, stick to the S Series. Cons:None. Great bat for the person that can't quite swing the XL1 but the S series is too light for.

My son is turning 11, is 5 ft. and weighs 100 lbs. I'm tossed up on getting the MAKO or XL1. He has a nice swing and more of a contact hitter. Normally singles, doubles, and triple here and there. Lots of line drives. Would like to get a bat he will be able to use for a couple years.

If your son is more of a contact hitter, the 2014 Easton MAKO Youth Baseball Bat (YB14MK) may be the better option. The MAKO features a balanced swing weight, which is generally preferred by contact hitters. The MAKO also features an extended barrel design, which is normally only seen in end loaded bats (such as the XL1), so it is the best of both worlds for both contact and power hitting. Based on his height and weight, we recommend a 30" bat.

My son is turning 8 years old. He is 48 inches tall and weighs 53 pounds. His hitting coach is recommending that we upgrade his bat from the Easton S500 to the Easton MAKO in the 28 ounce size. Others have recommended the S1 or S3. What would you recommend?

The 2014 Easton MAKO Youth Baseball Bat (YB14MK), 2014 Easton S1 Youth Baseball Bat (YB14S1), and the 2014 Easton S3 Youth Baseball Bat (YB14S3) are all nice options that would have their individual advantages. The preference between the three would come down to what you are looking for. The S3 will be a stiffer design that will allow for more control over the bat head while swinging and will be alloy which will be hot out of the wrapper and priced lower than the other two. The S1 is a two-piece composite design that will flex more and provide a whipping motion with the bat that can help increase bat speed. The MAKO is similar in design to the S1 but has a more extended barrel for a larger sweet spot and an enhanced connection point between the barrel and the handle which will make it slightly more effective at reducing sting or vibration to the hands.
