End Loaded! For the Big Boys Ben Montgomery parent

Pros: Absurd pop - at least as much pop as the 2015 xl1. I have swung both bats, and the feel of the ball leaving the bat is very similar. Very similar weight distribution as the xl1. I am a 240lb, 6-4 father. Great bat for 12-14yo's who weigh at least 120-125lbs.

Cons: My son is 13yo, 5-8 and 112lbs. We bought the bat after watching last year's 13yo's look like super heroes hitting with the xl1. Although my son loved the pop of the bat, he could not make the necessary adjustments during a swing to ultimately control the end loaded weight distribution of the bat.

2016 Easton MAKO XL AZ player

Pros: Huge sweet spot, no vibration, quick break in, insane pop. Definitly is as good if not better than 2015 easton XL1

Cons: Rattle in the easton emblem in the center of the end cap, but i was informed that this won't affect performance by JustBats.

excellent bat PBA RENEGADES parent

Pros: This bat is really hot after being broken in. The ball jumps off of this bat. This is the best composite bat Easton has made this far.

Cons: This bat is not weighted correctly. It is supposed to be a -5 but I had it weighed at 26.6 ounces which makes it a -3.5 at 30 inches. I had another 30 -5 weighed and it weighed 28 ounces. That would make it a -2. If your player can handle the weight it is the best bat in the market!

Smaller than 2015 model Big Country parent

Pros: Nice new paint job. Great feel, once broke in has good pop. Longer break in period than cf8 so hopefully it outlast it. son moved from 2015 XL -8 to this model -5.

Cons: This bats sweet spot is about 2 inches smaller than the 2015 model. I don't see how they can continue to call this an XL with this glaring difference. Sweet spot not as big and cf8 is bigger. If cf8 was end loaded I'd go with that bat.

One of the best we have purchased so far Jason Lindauer parent

Pros: One of the best end-loaded bats we have ever bought. Keep in mind that full composites run heavy, so the drop 5 is really a drop 3 1/2. It has the weight and balance of a wood bat with a lot more pop. Excellent transition bat from -5 to BBCOR. My son (13) has always preferred balanced bats but changed his mind after using the XL. Extremely happy with the purchase so far.

Cons: Full composite bat means less than 60 degrees and it has a chance of cracking. Tough to use during the Spring in VA.

Maybe a good bat, just not a good fit for my son.. Matt Buckner parent

Pros: Well made, decent pop...

Cons: Son did not like the end loading, made the bat feel heavier than the 32/29 BBCOR bat he was using that this was to replace. In the cage he got his hands stung a few times which is odd for a 2 piece bat.

2016 MAKO XL BGK parent

Pros: Start off by saying Just Bats is the only way to go to purchase a bat. customer service and shipping 5 stars!! .....Bat came out the wrapper "Hot". My son is 5' 105 lbs and has a very quick and strong swing. I was worried about the -5 being to heavy, but he handles it very well. no vibration or sting. I just hope this bat last longer than his Mako Torq, crack in 4 weeks, but we will see. My son is very happy with the bat, all he want to do is HIT!

Cons: None so far.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Is this bat for contact hitters or is it end-loaded? pauly151
The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) is more of an end-loaded model.
Patrick
Is this bat similar to the 2015 XL1 -5 big barrel? J.T
Yes, the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball SL16MK5 is going to be the model that replaced the XL1. The MAKO XL uses Easton's TCT Composite while the XL1 uses the older IMX composite. Swing weight of the two will be very similar.
John
Is there a break in period needed with this bat? JZ
The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 requires a break-in period of 150-200 swings off a tee or soft toss while rotating the barrel a 1/4" after every swing to break-in the composite fiber materials.
Cameron
Can it be used in the cold? JZ
The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 can be used in the cold but composite barrels typically will not perform as well in colder weather. Ideal weather would be 72 degrees or warmer and in weather 55 degrees Fahrenheit or less they can experience cracking.
Cameron
Do you know if this bat is approved for high school play (Texas UIL rules)? TC
The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 is not BBCOR certified and will not be legal for play at the high school level. I have included a link below to the 2016 Easton MAKO XL BBCOR model which will be legal for play at the high school level. http://www.justbats.com/product/2016-easton-mako-xl-bbcor-baseball-bat--bb16mkl/22898/
John P
Big barrel bat correct? john kid
The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 is a big barrel bat with a 2 5/8 inch barrel diameter.
Cameron
Would you recommend a 32"/27 oz size of this bat for a 12 year old turning 13 in the next month? nick
As long as you feel that your soon-to-be 13 year old can handle the end-loaded 27 oz weight of the 32" option of this 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5), I would recommend that size option of this bat. I might recommend consulting him as well and seeing what size he feels that he will be most comfortable for swinging. If he is moving from a much lighter bat, the 31"/26 oz size might be more comfortable for him.
Ben
I have read and heard the weight on this bat is incorrect at -5. Is this the case and how can I be sure I get a -5 bat? T
If you were to statically weigh this 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5), it will probably register as 1 oz to 1.5 oz over what is listed. Most manufacturer's put the listed weight at what they call the "swing weight". "Swing weight" is how the bat will feel in ounces when it is swung. The "swing weight" will typically be heavier when compared to the static weight. Overall, I would say that it will be hard to find a model of this MAKO XL that statically weighs the same as its swing weight (listed weight).
Ben
I am 130 pounds and 5'4". What size bat would you recommend? john bones
Based upon your height and weight, I would recommend 31" 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5.
John P.
I am 13 years old, 133 pounds and I'm 5'4". Should I get the MAKO XL -8 or -5? bmoney
Based on your height and weight, we would recommend getting the Easton MAKO XL in a 31 inch model. As for the weight, we would recommend using the -8 if in 7th grade and the -5 if in 8th grade. This will make the transition easier for someone as they prepare for the BBCOR era (-3) bats when they get to high school.
Cameron
Is this a bat for a power hitter or more of a contact hitter? Ray R
The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 has an end loaded swing weight and it is typically best suited for a power hitter.
Jason
I am a 5'8", seventh grader. I am choosing between this and the Louisville Slugger (-5). What should I choose? owen
For most players around 7th grade age, we are suggesting to get a bat with a 31" length. I would imagine you were comparing this MAKO XL to the Prime 916 from Louisville Slugger that is made in the same -5 size. This 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) and the Prime 916 are both two-piece, all-composite bats. However, this MAKO XL is more end-loaded where the Prime 916 is more balanced. When making a decision between the two bats, you'll need to decide if you want a bat with more balance or end-load.
Ben
I just got this bat (brand new) from Ebay and all I've done is hit light soft-toss. I found out that the end cap spins, but only when I touch it. Will it effect the bat or possibly break off? needtoknowjoe
The end cap on the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 is not designed to spin and this issue was more than likely caused by a ball that was struck near the end cap. It is tough to say whether or not this will affect the performance of the bat right now but it is very likely there will be an issue resulting from the end cap in the near future.
Cameron
I am 5'3" and 120 lbs. What size bat should I get? Dinger Boy
Based upon your height and weight, I would make a general recommendation of getting this bat in the 31" option. If you feel that you can handle the end-loaded, 26 oz weight of the 31" option of this bat, I would recommend looking to that size option.
Ben
I'm going into 8th grade and need to use a -3 by 9th grade. I currently use a -10. What bat should I use for my 8th grade season? I'm 5'2" and 110 lbs. AY
I would recommend going to a -5 to make the jump to a -3 more gradual. I would recommend the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) in that 31" 26 oz sizing.
Carter
Is this bat legal for Little League in the junior division? Greg
The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) is not approved for Little League Juniors.
John
I am a 5'6", 145 pound 14 year old. What size do you recommend? dinger kid
Based on your height and weight, we suggest a 30" model in the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5.
Jason
Are drop 5 bats legal for 14U travel ball? Kg
This 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) has a -5 length-to-weight ratio, a 2 5/8" barrel diameter and USSSA 1.15 BPF certification. These characteristics should make it legal for use in travel tourneys that only require the bats to have USSSA 1.15 BPF certification.
Ben
Do you sell a bat pack with MAKO Senior League -5 and -8? AY
At this time we do not feature the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 in a bat pack with a -5 and -8.
Cameron
I am 5'6", 160 lbs and 13. I am about to go to 14U and play middle school baseball. What size should I get? Dingerandstingers
Based on your height and weight, we suggest a 32" model in the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5.
Jason
My boy is 5'11" 130 with a 71" wing span and growing (only 12). What's the best length/weight? Blaze
Based on your sons height and weight I would recommend swinging a 32" -5 version of the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5.
Carter
What size bat do you suggest for my son for travel ball? He just turned 13 years old. He is 5'7" and weighs 115 lbs. He is a strong kid that hits the ball hard with his current 31" -9 Easton XL3. MCBaseball
For your son's current height and weight, we recommend a 31" length bat. Typically 13 year old players are using either a -8 or -5 length to weight ratio.
Angelique
My son just turned 14 and is 5'9" and weighs 128 lbs. What size bat should he use? Alex
For a player of his size, I would go with the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 in the 32" 27 oz. size.
Marcus
My son is 13 and is 5 foot 6, 110 pounds and is pretty strong for his size. Is this bat too heavy for him, and if not, what size would be best? zack
Based on your sons height and weight we would recommend the 31" 26 oz 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 for him.
Carter
I am 13, 135 lbs and 5 foot 3 and I swing a 31 inch drop 11 but it's super light. What should I swing? t-money
I would probably recommend going up to a 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK8 which is a -8 before you go up to the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 which is a -5. hat way you are only going up 3 ounces at a time. Going from a -11 to a -5 is probably too big of a jump to do all at once.
Carter
What are the differences between this bat and the MAKO XL TORQ drop -5? Ralph
The only difference between the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) and the 2016 Easton MAKO TORQ XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MKT5) is going to be the bottom rotating handle piece. Outside of that the bats are built out of the same materials, have the same end-loaded feel, and have similar swing characteristics.
Jake
This bat is fully composite isn't it? keaton baseball
The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) is going to be a two-piece fully composite end-loaded bat.
Jake
My son will be playing 14U this fall and next spring. He has to move to drop -5. He is 5'3", 135 lbs. He is pretty strong and has pretty fast hands. He has been using the Easton S1 drop -10 in a 31" length for the last two seasons. Trying to decide between 31" or 32". Leaning toward 32" as I would like to get two seasons out of this new bat. Your thoughts? Ralph
A 32" 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) would give him more room to grown into the bat, but going from a drop -10 balanced S1 all the way to a 32" end-loaded MAKO will increase his bat weight by 6 ounces. That is a pretty big increase and with the bat being end-loaded I think you can expect to see his bat speeds decrease for a brief period until he can build the strength to swing that heavier bat.
Jake
I am 13 years old, 5'6" and 140 lbs. I currently use a 31" 21 oz. MAKO XL. What size do you recommend for the -5 MAKO XL? JP3535
For your height and weight, we recommend a 32" 27 oz. size in the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5.
Angelique
Is the Mako XL the same bat as the Easton XL1? Ethan
The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) replaced the Easton XL1. They are identical bats. Both are two-piece fully composite and end-loaded.
Jake
I am 12 years (5'1", 88 lbs.) old and moving up to 13 year old Babe Ruth and 13U travel this fall. I have been swinging a MAKO 30/20 for the past year with a lot of success. Can you suggest a good bat and size for me? Joey
Based on your height and weight we would recommend going with a 30"/22oz. This can help you transition into the -3 bat that you are going to be using soon. A good one to check out would be the 2017 Easton MAKO BEAST XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL17MK8).
Carter
My son is about to be 13 is 5'1 and about 100 pounds. Last year he used a 29/19 Easton MAKO 2 3/4 big barrel. What should we transition to? Wynn
Based on your sons height and weight I would recommend a 31" length. If you think that is too much of a jump, you could do 30". At the age of 13, he will soon need to transition to BBCOR certification, which is 2 5/8 barrel and a -3. I would recommend moving to a 2 5/8 and a -8 to -5. This will make the transition to BBCOR a bit easier.
Linsey
My son is 12 years old and weighs 105 pounds and plays 13U baseball. Would you recommend this bat, the Marucci CAT 7, 2016 Easton MAKO or 2017 DeMarini Voodoo balanced? myles
The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 is going to feature an end-loaded swing weight design. All the other bats will have a balanced swing weight. The end-loaded design is usually preferred more so by the power hitters or those who are stronger. The Marucci Cat 7 will be balanced and a one-piece fully alloy design while the DeMarini Voodoo will have a two-piece design with a composite handle and alloy barrel. Which bat to choose is more so one of personal preference to the player but most will gravitate more towards the balanced swing weight design of either the Marucci Cat 7 or DeMarini Voodoo. A two-piece bat will also help reduce vibration more and for younger players who struggle to square up the ball consistently this is also something to take into consideration.
Cameron
My son needs to use a drop 5 bat this season, but it will be for only one year. He's 5'4" 115 lbs that hits line drives vs. big power. What would be the best bats to consider? AJ
Based on your sons height and weight we would recommend swinging a 31" 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) or the 2017 Easton XL3 Senior League Baseball Bat (SL17X35 ).
Carter
Will this bat generate deeper hits like home runs? I can handle the weight. I am 5'7" 130 lbs. dinger
It ultimately depends on the player, but the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 has an end loaded swing weight and that can help some players increase their power. Based on your height and weight, we suggest a 32".
Jason
What size would you recommend for a 5'9" and 118 pound 13 year old who will be playing 14U this year? He grew a ton and hit a 31 inch -10 last year and is kind of transitioning from contact to power hitter. Rudy
Based on the player's height and weight, we would recommend getting the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 in a 31/26. Typically, a 32 inch bat would be the better option but based on the fact that his last bat was 21 ounces it would be better not to swing something with 27 ounces.
Cameron
My son is 13 years old, 5'1" and 121 pounds. Last season he used a Easton MAKO 30 inch -11. He is moving up to Pony league and the barrel size goes up to 2 5/8". With all that being said what bat length and weight do you suggest for his age, height and weight and in the 2 5/8" size barrel? Ruth
Based on your son's height and weight, we would recommend getting the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 in a 31 inch 26 ounce model.
Cameron
I am 5'6" and 125 lbs. Would you recommend a 32" or a 31"? freddy
Based upon your height and weight, I would make a general recommendation of getting this 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) in the 32" length as long as you can handle the end-loaded 27 oz weight of that bat.
Ben
Is this bat legal for use in u13 Babe Ruth? Frogger
The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 features a 2 5/8" barrel diameter, so it would not be legal in a Babe Ruth league since they require a 2 1/4" diameter.
Logan
My son is 13 and 5'11 and weighs 160. Would you recommend the 32 inch 27 oz Mako SL16MK5 for him? He plays in mostly USSSA baseball tournaments. scon109
Based on your sons height and weight I would recommend the 32"/27 ounce 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5).
Carter
Is this bat legal in the Pony Colt league? My son is 13 and he is 5'5" and 120 lbs. What size do you recommend? JR
The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 would not be legal for Pony Colt league as this bat does not feature BBCOR certification. Based on your son's height and weight, we would recommend getting a 31 inch BBCOR bat.
Cameron
What is the difference between this bat and the Easton XL3? spikes
The difference between the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 and the XL3 is the fact that the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 is a two-piece fully composite bat with an end-loaded swing weight while the Easton XL3 is a one-piece fully alloy bat with an end-loaded swing weight design.
Cameron
My son swung the XL 1 last year, 32 -8. he is 5'5.5" around 130. He plays 13U, and will play HS next year. He has been practicing with a wood 32 inch -3 with his trainer this winter. Do you suggest going to a -5 this season, or go right to the -3? Baseball mom
That would come down to what the player prefers. The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 will have a higher performance ceiling than a -3 BBCOR. If he is used to the size and likes the bigger -3 bats, I'd say stick with that. If he wants a higher performing bat this season, I would go with the -5.
Logan
Do Easton composite bats come broken in? Anonymous
No, they do not as it requires some use to break them in. We generally recommend 150-200 swings off a tee or soft toss, rotating the bat a bit each swing for an even break-in all around the barrel.
Kyle J.
Will hitting heavy training balls harm the bat and its performance? Sean
I would refrain from using this 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) with any weighted balls. Typically using anything that is more dense than a regular baseball will present a big risk of damaging the bat.
Ben
My son is 5'5 105 pounds and he needs a drop 5 for next season. What size do you recommend? Jamie
Based on your player's height and weight, I would suggest a 31" 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5
Logan
I am wondering what size to get for my son. He is 12 years old, 5'7" and 123 lbs. what to get
Based on your player's height and weight, I would suggest a 32" 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5.
Logan
Would I be able to use the MAKO XL this year with the new USA bat rules? Ethan
The Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) has a BPF 1.5 sticker and can be used in USSSA leagues but cannot be used in USA leagues.
Taylor
Is this bat BBCOR certified? Mark Moreno
No, this bat does not have the BBCOR certification stamp. It has the USSSA certification stamp. All BBCOR bats are -3 in drop.
