Yes, the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball SL16MK5 is going to be the model that replaced the XL1. The MAKO XL uses Easton's TCT Composite while the XL1 uses the older IMX composite. Swing weight of the two will be very similar.

As long as you feel that your soon-to-be 13 year old can handle the end-loaded 27 oz weight of the 32" option of this 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5), I would recommend that size option of this bat. I might recommend consulting him as well and seeing what size he feels that he will be most comfortable for swinging. If he is moving from a much lighter bat, the 31"/26 oz size might be more comfortable for him.

If you were to statically weigh this 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5), it will probably register as 1 oz to 1.5 oz over what is listed. Most manufacturer's put the listed weight at what they call the "swing weight". "Swing weight" is how the bat will feel in ounces when it is swung. The "swing weight" will typically be heavier when compared to the static weight. Overall, I would say that it will be hard to find a model of this MAKO XL that statically weighs the same as its swing weight (listed weight).

Based on your height and weight, we would recommend getting the Easton MAKO XL in a 31 inch model. As for the weight, we would recommend using the -8 if in 7th grade and the -5 if in 8th grade. This will make the transition easier for someone as they prepare for the BBCOR era (-3) bats when they get to high school.

I would imagine you were comparing this MAKO XL to the Prime 916 from Louisville Slugger that is made in the same -5 size. This 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) and the Prime 916 are both two-piece, all-composite bats. However, this MAKO XL is more end-loaded where the Prime 916 is more balanced. When making a decision between the two bats, you'll need to decide if you want a bat with more balance or end-load.

I just got this bat (brand new) from Ebay and all I've done is hit light soft-toss. I found out that the end cap spins, but only when I touch it. Will it effect the bat or possibly break off? needtoknowjoe
The end cap on the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 is not designed to spin and this issue was more than likely caused by a ball that was struck near the end cap. It is tough to say whether or not this will affect the performance of the bat right now but it is very likely there will be an issue resulting from the end cap in the near future.

Going from a -11 to a -5 is probably too big of a jump to do all at once.

A 32" 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK5) would give him more room to grown into the bat, but going from a drop -10 balanced S1 all the way to a 32" end-loaded MAKO will increase his bat weight by 6 ounces. That is a pretty big increase and with the bat being end-loaded I think you can expect to see his bat speeds decrease for a brief period until he can build the strength to swing that heavier bat.

Based on your sons height and weight I would recommend a 31" length. If you think that is too much of a jump, you could do 30". At the age of 13, he will soon need to transition to BBCOR certification, which is 2 5/8 barrel and a -3. I would recommend moving to a 2 5/8 and a -8 to -5. This will make the transition to BBCOR a bit easier.

The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK5 is going to feature an end-loaded swing weight design. All the other bats will have a balanced swing weight. The end-loaded design is usually preferred more so by the power hitters or those who are stronger. The Marucci Cat 7 will be balanced and a one-piece fully alloy design while the DeMarini Voodoo will have a two-piece design with a composite handle and alloy barrel. Which bat to choose is more so one of personal preference to the player but most will gravitate more towards the balanced swing weight design of either the Marucci Cat 7 or DeMarini Voodoo. A two-piece bat will also help reduce vibration more and for younger players who struggle to square up the ball consistently this is also something to take into consideration.
