Better than last years Coach coach

Pros: Construction Grip End Heavy Feel Durability - This 716 replaced last years 715 for paint chipping on the barrel. The paint seems better already than last years. No textured surface on the barrel or connection at the handle like last years.

Cons: Can't think of any so far.

Good Purchase Roger Williams parent

Pros: Wanted to avoid purchasing a -5 for my 14 yo about to go into HS in the Fall, only 3 mos. until BBCOR, and he was using his older brother's 2 y.o. DeMarini and Easton bats, but they just seemed flat and dull being old. So I bit the bullet and purchased a 32/27 version of this bat. 1st AB he crushes a deep gap double to the fence. Big smile and team mates going "whoa, that bat has pop."

Cons: None so far.

Cons: The paint has chipped after one practice. Not really a problem just thought I shoud note that.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS716X? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Will Louisville slugger be making the 2016 Select 716 Senior League bat in a 30" drop 8? Bo
Unfortunately, Louisville Slugger does not manufacture the Select 715 in a -8 drop weight. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Tessa
I know they're not out yet, but what's the difference between the 2016 Easton MAKO and this bat? Big K
We do not have any information yet on the new 2016 MAKO, but my guess is that it will be a fully composite two-piece bat as it has been in the past. That's where the 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLS716X) differs. It's going to be a two-piece hybrid design. Both will be balanced bats.
Jake
Does this bat come in a drop 5 version? Adam
There will be a -5 version of the 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLS716X). It should be released about mid October.
Patrick
My son loves Louisville Slugger and will only swing them. He is not a power hitter but would like to add more pop to his hits. He currently swings the Omaha because it is not end heavy at all. Do you think he would swing the Select or Prime the same or would the added weight at the end of the barrel take away from his lack of strength? I want to get him a new bat but not sure if he would like the Select or Prime. Any thoughts? KSimp34
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLS716X) will be more like his current bat, the LS Omaha, in that it will feature an alloy barrel. As far as the swing weight of both the 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLS716X) and the 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLP916X) will both feature balanced swing weight. Either would be great options and similar feel to his current bat. Comes down to whether you want another alloy barrel (Select 716) or composite (Prime 916).
Cameron
What's the biggest difference between alloy and composite? JB
The biggest differences between alloy and composite, besides the cost, is going to be the following: alloy bats are more durable in colder weather, composite can perform slightly better in warmer weather (70+ degrees Fahrenheit), alloy bats are prone to denting/composite bats are prone to cracking, alloy bats are ready to go out-of-the-wrapper while composite bats will require a break-in period before being game ready (typically 150-200 swings off a batting tee or soft toss while rotating the barrel a 1/4" after each swing) and composite bats, on average, will feature a slightly lighter swing weight as well as extended barrel/larger sweet spot when compared to an alloy bat.
Cameron
What is the difference in the alloy of the 716 vs. the 516 Omaha? Will one have more pop vs. the other? And does the 716 have the 40% longer barrel like the 516? DR
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS716X is going to feature the AC21 Alloy, which is going to feel a little heavier than the 7U1 Alloy used on the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO516X. I would not say that one alloy has more pop than the other alloy. Also, yes the 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS716X is going to feature a 40% longer barrel than previous models.
Nick
Is this bat allowed in Little League play Junior division? Alex
No, The 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS716X would not be legal for play in the Junior Division of Little League Baseball. This particular model features a 2 3/4" barrel, whereas that division only allows barrel sizes up to 2 5/8".
Nick
Is this bat better than the 516? Conner
I would not say that the 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS716X is better than the Omaha 516 as they are both excellent models in their respective categories. The Select 716 is a two-piece hybrid design while the Omaha 516 is a one-piece fully alloy design.
John P.
Is this bat full composite? Brevin
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS716X is a two-piece hybrid. It has an alloy barrel and a composite handle.
Jason
What does the X mean in the model #SLS716X? I've seen it also listed as SLS7160. Are these the same bat? Jay
The X on 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS716X refers to the bigger barrel. It features a 2 3/4" barrel diameter. While the SLS7160 features a slightly smaller 2 5/8" barrel.
Jason
I know most drop 10 bats are balanced. I wanted to know if this Louisville Slugger 716 is balanced, end loaded or slightly end loaded? RC
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS716X will feature a slightly end loaded swing weight.
John P.
Is this a legal bat in Babe Ruth League? stephanie
Unfortunately, the 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS716X features a 2 3/4" barrel and it is not legal for play in any division of Babe Ruth.
Jason
Can this bat be used in Pony League Pinto? dinnger10
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS716X cannot be used in Pony League Pinto play as this bat has a 2 3/4" barrel diameter. Only 2 1/4" and 2 5/8" barrel diameter bats are legal for play.
Cameron
(1) Does this bat require a break-in like a full composite? (2) Also, what would be the advantages or disadvantages of this bat compared to the full composite? CH
(1) This 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLS716X) will not require a break-in period since the barrel is composed of alloy material. (2) Since both styles of bats will have the same potential for performance under the USSSA 1.15 certification and since most full composite bats are two-piece just like this Select 716; it is difficult for me to really find a true disadvantage to this bat (or the composite bats) when speaking generally. The only disadvantage that may be present on this bat is the possibility that your player doesn't like alloy barrel bats.
Ben
Can this bat be used in little league? lola martin
The bat comes with the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp. It has an alloy barrel and composite handle with a 2 3/4" barrel diameter. This should be enough information to determine if it is legal. Without knowing the specific age range, league name, etc.
Kyle J.
Is this bat legal to use at Intermediate Level? jt
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS716X is not legal for play in the Intermediate League of Little League. The 2 3/4" barrel diameter makes the bat illegal. They do not allow a bat to exceed the 2 5/8" diameter.
Jason
Is there an updated model of this bat for 2017? Bill
No, the 716 was not made this year for 2017. The Prime 917 is the only three-piece design bat for Louisville Slugger in 2017.

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
