The only difference between the 2017 Easton MAKO BEAST Youth Baseball Bat (YB17MK11) and the 2017 Easton MAKO BEAST Youth Baseball Bat (YB17MK12) is going to be that one ounce. The reason they have both of these models is that some people are going to want a little bit lighter bat and other people are going to want a bat that is a little heavier. All players have their own personal preference and the more options that they have the better.

The only difference between the 2017 Easton MAKO BEAST Youth Baseball Bat (YB17MK11) and the 2017 Easton MAKO BEAST XL Youth Baseball Bat (YB17MK10) is that end load. Power hitters tend to prefer that end load because it gets a little bit more weight behind the ball. But it will also feel a little bit heavier to swing.

It appears that way in the pictures simply because two different lengths were used. For example, the distance will be greater on a 32" model and shorter on a 28" model. The distance from the end of the grip to the barrel depends on the length of the bat, not the specific model of MAKO.

For just about every bat that is made, the static weight of the bat will be about 0.5 to 1.5 oz over the listed weight. The 2016 MAKOS were a little heavy and were about 2 oz over the listed weight. This year, the 2017 Easton MAKO BEAST Youth Baseball Bat (YB17MK11) should feature a static weight that is about 0.5 to 1.5 oz over the listed weight.

Based on your son's height, as well as age, we would not recommend getting the 2017 Easton MAKO BEAST Youth Baseball Bat: YB17MK11 as it is a drop 11. For a 12 year old player, a drop 10 bat would work best. Would recommend looking into the 2017 Easton MAKO BEAST XL Youth Baseball Bat: YB17MK10. Unfortunately we only have this bat left in a 29/19 and for someone that is 5' it may be best to get a 30 inch model.
