Great -5 Carter parent

Pros: Excellent bat. My son needs a -5 for one year and Omaha delivers with a great product for the money. Big pop. His older brother loves the -3 Omaha---so we will move into that when he goes to HS next year

Cons: None

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Louisville Slugger Omaha 517 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5175? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Does this bat need breaking in? lovethegame
Since the 2017 Louisville Slugger Omaha 517 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5175 is an alloy bat, it does not require any breaking in to be game ready. Only composite barreled bats will need to go through a break-in period.
Marcus
Does this model have the 30 Day Performance Promise? jeff tanner
Unfortunately the 2017 Louisville Slugger Omaha 517 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5175 does not have a 30 Day Performance Promise. None of Louisville Slugger's 2017 bats will carry that type of promise.

I am looking for a bat for a 13U select player. He would prefer a 29" drop 5 -I understand they need to use a drop 5 in 13u--and he likes the Louisville composite, but I am not seeing that they make them in that size. Is this the closest bat or does he have other options? Kevin Fiur
Unfortunately at this time we do not have any 29" -5 Louisville Slugger composites. It is not a very popular size. At the moment we only have one bat that is a 29" -5 and it is not composite. I would recommend seeing if he could swing a 30" -5 and checking out the 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLP9165).
Carter
How does the the 916 you recommended compare to the 2017 517? What are the main differences? Kevin Fiur
The 2017 Louisville Slugger Omaha 517 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5175 is a one-piece alloy bat where as the Louisville Slugger Prime 916 is a three piece fully composite bat.
Tori
What's the difference between this bat and Omaha 516? Will it be OK for a contact hitter? Baldie
This 2017 Louisville Slugger Omaha 517 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLO5175) will be different from the Omaha 516 because of the new ST 7U1+ alloy material that allows for a big sweet spot and a stiffer feel at contact. As well, for this 2017 Omaha 517, Slugger will cease using the Flexband technology that helped keep older models of the bat within the requirements set forth by BBCOR certification. This is definately a good option for a contact or power hitter. The Omaha series has been a very popular option for players for a very long time.
Carter
My son's school requires a BESR certification. Does this bat qualify? Walter
The 2017 Louisville Slugger Omaha 517 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5175 will not feature BESR certification. The last year manufacturers produced bats featuring BESR certification (which is what high school and college players were using) was in 2010. Starting in the spring of 2011 all high school and college players were required to use BBCOR bats and that holds true today; these bats have a -3 length to weight ratio.
Cameron
What are the main differences between this bat and the 2017 Easton XL3? Balanced swing weight versus end-loaded means what and does one benefit a contact/ line drive hitter versus a power hitter more? DD
Balanced means the weight is distributed evenly throughout the bat, while end-loaded typically shifts .5-1 oz towards the barrel end of the bat. Balanced models typically are preferred by contact hitters, while power hitters generally like end-loaded models.
Kyle J.
what bat do you suggest the 2017 omaha 517, the Easton 2017 XL3 or the 2017 rawlings 5150. all in drop 5. im not 100% sure which one so id like to hear from you Eman Taylor
It really depends on you hitting style, if you are more of a contact hitter, I would advise going with either the 2017 Louisville Slugger Omaha 517 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5175 or the 2017 Rawlings 5150 Senior League Baseball Bat: SL755 both are very balanced bats. If you are more of a power hitter I would advise going with the more end loaded feeling 2017 Easton XL3 Senior League Baseball Bat: SL17X35.

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
