Description

For the past several years, the CF4 has dominated discussions about the hottest bats on the market. This year, DeMarini raises the stakes by introducing a completely revamped successor, aptly named the CF5. The CF5 is built on the principle of geometric perfection. DeMarini has unveiled a new composite material, called TR3 Strut Composite, that imitates the structure of crystals which are one of the strongest and most stable compounds on Earth. The triangle formation inside the barrel provides a fixed ratio of sides and angles so it's strong, stable and predictable - without any unnecessary weight! The molecular structure of the TR3 Strut handle is designed to efficiently transition power from the hands to the barrel to give players balance and consistency with every swing. This two-piece design is engineered durable with a very high strength to weight ratio, and light enough to be worthy of Stacked Composite walls. A bat like this can't be plugged with any average end cap, so DeMarini engineered the new Geo Endcap to meet its needs. The Geo Endcap is full of load-balancing triangles and is designed to maintain the stiffness of the barrel while dampening vibration to give hitters an amazing feel, shot after shot! The CF5 Insane features a more endloaded weight for players looking to get an extra burst of power behind their swing! DeMarini: Insane Dedication to Performance! Approved for play in ASA, USSSA, NSA, ISA, and ISF. The CF5 Insane is backed by a Full Twelve (12) Month Manufacturer's Warranty. Free Shipping!

Pros: 14u DD starting launching the balls right away. didnt even need to break it in. Highly recommend it. Switched to this from a Combat Virus that went dead after 7 mos. DD loved how it felt lighter than her previous 32/22.

Cons: little pricey, but worth it.

Pros: I LOVE THIS BAT! The pop you get off this bat is amazing. It boosted my self confidents at the plate a ton, and it will boost yours to.I hit three home runs so far in my high school season with this bat. I love the felling when I made contact with the bat on ball. I would always pick this bat over other bats because their is such a difference in making the ball fly.

Cons: I hate nothing about this bat.

Pros: From day one, my daughter started seeing the improved distance with this bat...she is a natural power hitter, and has hit one home run last year with an alloy. She already has 3 dingers this year, and we have another half season to go!! She can't stop talking about this bat!!!

Cons: Can't keep everyone else in the dugout from picking it up for their at-bat!!!

Pros: Daughter has swung DeMarini's exclusively for a couple of years now and loves the end loaded insane. She has now stepped up to the 34" and is LOVING IT. She get's pitched inside allot and the extra inch is the difference between contacting handle or barrel. Only swung in BP but she can't wait to test it in the game.

Cons: None

Pros: Those grounders that were just routine are now getting by the infielders and the base hits have enough pop to hit the lip of the grass in RF and ricochet past the CF in not time for a triple! My daughter loves it even though it seemed heavy she likes the way it comes around thru the zone.

Cons: none

Pros: We bought this bat in June for my 10 yr old daughter. The ball does fly off the bat after it is broken in. She loves the bat and one of her teammates loved it as well and her parents bought her one as well. I would have to say my daughter is now the best hitter on her 10U All Star team and part of that is because of this bat.

Cons: Durability. Tonight at her batting practice her hitting coach noticed the crack and said the bat can no longer be used in a game. This is after 3 months of use and not a lot of use. I am going to buy another but this is really disturbing that it cracked so quickly.

Pros: I bought this bat for my 12 yo niece. I have noticed that she seems to be hitting the ball farther w/less effort in her swing. So far she loves the Insane. She also has a cf4 but now uses the Insane over this bat.

Cons: none yet. We have used it only in 3 games as i got it late in the season. We will be starting again soon and am anxious to see how it holds up. I have read of some of the bats breaking. I sure hope not.

Pros: Terrific POP. Has taken our power hitter to new heights 270-280 feet in the air. B/A still hovers around .450. The home runs from this 15 year old are incredible

Cons: Only those with strong swing mechanics need apply... Some team mates struggle with the end weighting on this bat and lose bat speed/consistent solid contact.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the DeMarini CF5 Insane -10 Fastpitch Softball Bat: DXCFI? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

How does this bat compare performance wise to the -10 CF5 hope? Is it true that this bat is more appropriate for power hitters than average hitters looking to improve their hitting? me
Yes, the only difference is that the insane is endloaded and is more suited for power hitters. The ball will carry further for hitters with a quick swing speed.
Mark
I need to decide between a 33/23 cf5 insane and 2012 33/23 Xeno. I like an end loaded feel, and I am a power hitter. I would like to hit more homers and harder line drives. Which would be the best for me? rCd006
I would recommend using the CF5 more than the Xeno. This bat has more of an endloaded weight which is designed for power hitters. If your a power hitter this bat is perfect.
Kris
what is the difference between the 2011 and 2012 CF5 Insane? Is it worth the extra money to get the new version? Pete
They did change up the composites and the end caps. They should perform similar as both are end loads. Comes down to preference.
lkh
im trying to decide between the cf4 st:dxcfp and the cf5 Insane what should i get? anna
The DXCFP is going to be a balanced bat and the Insane will be an endloaded bat. The Insane is used by power hitters.
K.B.
Do they offer this in a 33-23? I do not see it listed. Ks. Dad
They do offer these in a 33/23. We should be receiving more in the next 2 weeks.
K.B.
Whats the difference between The regular CF5 and this insane version? My daughter currently has a 2010 rockettech. Which one of th CF5's would be the best for her? Dadddd
The Insane will be slightly end-loaded and preferred by stronger players who hit for power. If she's a strong power hitter, the Insane would be a good choice. With a -9 length to weight ratio, the DXCFF would be a good choice if she's more of a contact/gap hitter.
Derek
My daughter hits for power but is also a line drive hitter. Would the Insane/Hope or Easton Stealth speed be better for her? Blazedad
The Insane sounds like the right fit for her.
Linda
im trying to decide between cf5 insane and easton stealth speed. im usually a power hitter so which would be better? RAMPx14
The Insane is an end load, which many power hitters love. The Speed is a slight end load, so it really depends on how much of an end load you prefer. Both are 2 piece all composite.
Linda
What is the difference between the cf5 and cf5 insane Ldog17
The Insane is a end loaded bat, meaning the weight is distributed more to the end the barrel.
Linda
Is the 2012 cf5 dxcfh hope bat the same as the 2012 cf5 insane bat, but with the breast cancer pink label? kenzie
No, the Insane is designed to be more end loaded. The Hope is a bit more balanced.
Linda
What is the difference between cf5 and the cf5 insane.. My daughter is a slapper and power slapper,. She was using the cf4 it was stolen so we have to get another bat Dern
The Cf5 insane is going to be slightly more end loaded than a regular CF5
Sean
do they have these in drop 9s? 22222
This bat only comes in a drop 10 size
Sean
Which bats are 2012 USSSA approved? Scott
You can find the list on our website by selecting fastpitch bats on the left hand side of the website. Then select "shop by approved for" and you will see all the fastpitch bats that are USSSA approved.
Kara
My daughter is not a power hitter nor does she have an aggressive swing. What would you recommend for her the Insane end loaded bat or the CF5 balanced bat? me
I would go with the Cf5 balanced bat, the end loaded insane would slow down her swing
Sean
im looking to replace my daughters current bat which is an easton stealth clarity 31/22. would the insane be a a similiar fit? rick
Yes, the insane will be a similar fit compared to the stealth clarity
John
I am newly transformed lefty slapper. i have been debating between the xeno and the demarnini CF5 for a while now. Whats your opinion for the best bat for a slapper? sarah
You will want to go with a two-piece design. The CF5 is going to have more flex than the Xeno.
Ryan
My daughter has been using the Rockettech 30/21 and needs to get a bigger bat, she is 5'6" 150lb. and a power hitter. Looking at the Exeno,CF5,Nanotech, and Rockettech which would you recomend in 33 or 34 inch. Thanks for your help. Fred
The Insane is going to be the most end loaded and best for a power hitter like your daughter. I would stick with a 33 inch based on her height and weight.
KB
I am trying to decide between the Xeno and the CF5 Insane for my daughter. She hits for average with good pop as well. She is 5'5" and weighs 130. Any suggestions? ROCKERSDAD
Wow, these two bats have been very popular. The DXCFI is designed with an endloaded swing weight helping the player get more power. These two bats are hot out of the wrapper with huge sweet spots and great feel. Picking between these two will be based more on what she likes, she can't go wrong with either choice.
Kris
What is the diff between the DXCFP and the DXCFI ? they are both for fastpitch but one is endloaded. Who would that be better for - Jaydogg
The DXCFI is endloaded. Endloaded bats are better suited for stronger players who hit for power
Tyler
Hello! I want to know which bat is right for me when it comes to the new CF5 line. For school, I am the power hitter and I do not know if I want the regular CF5 or the Insane bat. I had the CF4 for about a year and I loved it until it cracked the other day. I love DeMarini bats and would love it if you could help me find a new bat that is perfect for me. Christina
The Insane is an end-loaded model. It is better suited for stronger, power hitters with above average swing speed. If you think you fit that description, the Insane should be a great bat for you. However, if you used the regular CF4 (balanced version) with success last year, it wouldn't hurt to stick with the balanced version of this year's CF5.
Tyler
My daughter's strenght is in slapping, would you recommend this bat for that purpose? KappaDad
This bat is a more end- loaded bat designed for power hitters, giving them more pop. If your daughter can swing an end loaded bat then this will work for her.
Kris
What is the differance between the CF5 DXCFP and the CF5 Insane? Bill
The CF5 Insane is an end loaded bat. The DXCFP is a balanced bat.
Kara
Will this bat work well for my 10 y/o? She is a strong kid and hits the ball well. More of a power hitter. She is 5 foot 110 lbs. Looking at the 3l inch 21 oz. Justin
The Insane is an end loaded bat, and is normally suited for an older player with lots of power.
KB
Is the CF5 Insane harder to swing then the CF5 DXCFP? Abbie
The 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane: DXCFI Fastpitch bat has the same -10 oz. length to weight ratio as the 2012 DeMarini CF5 DXCFP Fastpitch bat, but the CF5 Insane has an end loaded swing weight. The CF5 DXCFP is going to provide a more balanced swing weight than the CF5 Insane. If you are not used to swinging an end loaded bat, it will have a heavier feel towards the end of the bat.
Austin
Will this bat be certified for use in 2013? sam
That all depends on your league or association. If you play ASA, yes, the DXCFI will be legal in 2013. If you play USSSA, it will be legal until September 1, 2013. After that date all bats will require the new USSSA stamp.
Tyler
Is this bat approved for Illinois High School softball? Karen
Most high schools require the bat to be ASA or USSSA certified. The 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane is approved for ASA and USSSA in 2012.
Kara
What would you recommend for a 14 year old, who hits the balls out of the park with the 2012 DeMarini CF5: DXCFP Fastpitch? Would you say to stick with that bat for the next year or get the 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane: DXCFI Fastpitch? CALEIGH4nia
If your daughter has a lot of power and good bat speed, an end loaded bat like the 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane would be an excellent choice for her.
Kara
I like this bat for my daughter. She's 11 and is solid. She plays slow pitch. Is this good for slow pitch I can't find a good slow pitch Demarini her size unless it's a fast pitch bat. Any suggestions? Jenny
Slow pitch bats are designed for adults. They will be 34" in length and 26 to 30oz. We do not have any slow pitch bats for an eleven year old. A fastptich bat or youth bat will be your best option. The 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane is an end loaded bat, best suited for a power hitter.
Kara
5'6" 115lb switch hitter mostly slaps is strong for her size. will be playing college ball next spring. thinking 32 22. would this be best choice? JS
You must be accustomed to purchasing bats. A 32" 22oz bat would be an excellent size for you daughter based on her height, weight, age, and hitting style. One thing though, the Insane will have a slight end-loaded feel. But, if your daughter is strong like you say, then she shouldn't have a problem with it. The balanced version will be model DXCFP (just in case).
Tyler
Have decided to get my 14 year old daughter a Demarini Insane bat. Besides price whats the difference between the CF4 and the CF5 versions? Is the CF5 that much better that it's worth the extra $100.00 ? sara's dad
The CF5 features a new composite material, called TR3 Strut Composite, that imitates the structure of crystals which are one of the strongest and most stable compounds on Earth. The triangle formation inside the barrel provides a fixed ratio of sides and angles so it's strong, stable and predictable - without any unnecessary weight! The CF4 did not feature this material, but is still a great bat. As far as whether it's worth the extra $100, that's really not a fair question as the CF4 is on closeout pricing through DeMarini. I think the CF5 is a great bat and would be well worth the extra money.
Tyler
Can we use this bat in pitchnig practice when using the pitching machine with the dimpled balls? People have told me that this will kill the bat.Thanks. Supersport396
Composite bats like the 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane should not be used in a batting cage that uses yellow dimpled balls. The dimpled balls are too dense and can damage a composite bat.
Kara
My daughter just got this bat for her upcoming senior year of high school softball. What is the best fastpitch softball to use during practice in terms of COR and compression. We do not want to damage the bat with the wrong balls. Softball Mom
You are going to want to search for softballs that are a 47 COR and have a max compression of 375. Here is the link to a site to check out some softballs. http://www.athleticsgalore.com/softball/fastpitch_softballs.htm
Derek
What is the difference between TR3 tri strut (2012) and TR3 flo (2013)? fastpitch mom
Both are similar in construction and strength, but DeMarini's new TR3 F.L.O. composite will be a little lighter in weight, allowing for faster swing speeds.
Tyler
15 years old 116 lb. sophmore in highschool. was swiging a 31in. 22oz wants to go up because its too light. Would a 23oz. or a 24oz. be better for me? softballswaglet28
That is the number one most difficult question for us to answer as we are unable to see and analyze your swing. If you felt you had well above average swing speed with the 22 oz model, then a jump up to 24 oz should work just fine.
Tyler
What is the difference between the DeMarini CF5 DXCFP and the CF5 Insane DXCFI other than $50? Bruce
The 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane is the end loaded model and the DeMarini CF5 is the balanced model.
Nick K.
What is the difference between an end loaded and a balanced bat? emsmom
A balanced bat is one that has an evenly distributed weight from knob to endcap and are the most common type of bat. Balanced bats are preferred by players who consider themselves contact hitters and players looking to control the bat and placement of the ball better. Endloaded bats usually have an extra half ounce or so of concentrated weight at the end of the bat near the endcap. This gives the hitter extra momentum when swinging through the ball. This type of bat is usually preferred by power hitters that like to swing for the fences. A maxloaded bat is very similar to an endloaded one, except that there is more weight at the end. This type of bat should only be used by stronger players that have no problems controlling their swing.
Tyler
Which bat is stronger, the 2012 CF5 Insane or 2012 Vendetta? Rem
Both of these are great bats. The 2012 CF5 insane will have an end loaded swing weight compared to the Vendetta.
Damon
Will it last for more than one year? i never use my bats in battingcages ect. and they always die on me and they never last a full year. before i spend more money on another bat i want to know if it will last! katie
The 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane: DXCFI Fastpitch bat has a one year manufacturer's warranty and is expected to last at least one year. If the bat should break in less than a year, you would be able to get a warranty replacement. Bat durability will vary based on a number of factors including but not limited to the amount of usage, speed of pitching, and player swing speed.
Nick D
My daughter is in 8th grade and is 4ft 9in and weighs about 100 lbs, what size bat would you recommend? Jodie
I would recommend a 31" bat for your daughter. If she is more of a power hitter, the 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane: DXCFI would be a good choice. If she is more of a line drive contact hitter, I would check out the 2012 DeMarini CF5: DXCFP.
Nick D
What does end loaded bat mean and how does it impact your swing? Dave
Endloaded bats like the CF5 Insane have a heavier swing weight as the weight distribution in the barrel is more towards the endcap. Strong hitters with high swing speeds benefit from endloaded bats as they will be able to generate more inertia, which will translate into more power.
Tyler
I am trying to decide between a xeno, rocket tech, and the Demarini cf5 insane. I am a power hitter and would like to hit the ball farther. Which bat would you recommend? Peanut0499
All of the bats you mentioned are great bats but if you are looking for added power, then you will want a bat with some extra weight at the end of the barrel. The Rocketech and the Insane will surely provide some extra power behind your swing.
Shelbe
my daughter is 5'3" tall and weighs 108lbs. What is the bat size would you recommend? softball #4
For a player at your daughters height and weight profile I would suggest a 32 inch, 22 ounce bat. Depending on her age an experience that could differ slightly, but that is the general suggestion.
Shelbe
What's the difference from the CF5 Insane and the regular CF5 light blue bat? robert
The 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane is the end loaded model and the DeMarini CF5 is the balanced model.
Nick
My daughter is 13 years old, 5'7 and 148 lbs. What size bat would you recommend? And also what size bat would you recommend in the Demarini Insane? Minks
Based on her height and weight we recommend a 33" 23 oz. The DeMarini Insane is end loaded, better for a player with power.
Kara
My Daughter is 13 years old, 5'1". She is swinging an Easton 32 inch 23 ounce I order your CF5 Insane is this recommended? Mike
The Demarini CF5 Insane, DXCFI is a great little bat and should be just enough end weighting to give your hitter some extra power on contact. For additional information feel free to contact our customer service at 1-866-321-2287.
Shelbe
I am getting back into the game after finishing grad school. I am 5'4" and 103 lbs; grew up swinging a 33" 21oz Easton and a 34" 24oz cage bat. Left-field-line-drive hitter slugging .701 this season but not a power hitter. Looking to buy two ASA bats - one with more heft for modified and one for fastpitch. Would you recommend an end-loaded 22oz (CF5 Insane) for modified, or a balanced 23 oz? What fastpitch bat size would best suit me, based on height? Thanks. pepper
The 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane is best suited for a very strong player with lots of power as it is very end loaded. We recommend a 33" balanced CF5.
Kara
From what I read, I love this bat. I'm 16, 5' 3" and 116lbs. I used an Anderson Rockettech once and my hits nicely improved. Would this bat be good for me? If so, which size? I usually use a 33-34" and 24-25oz. Shelby
The DeMarini CF5 will be a two piece composite and end loaded for more of a power hitter if that is your style of hitting. The suggested size for your height and weight would be a 31" model.
Damon
im 5ft 6in 115 lb i use a 31-21 with a fast bat would this bat hurt my swing? jessi
No. If you have above average swing speed, the endloaded CF5 Insane would be a good choice.
Tyler
My kid is currently using a 30" 18 oz Vendetta for her travel team. She is 4'9.5" tall and 104lbs. She is moving up to 12u. I am thinking about a heavier bat for more power. Your thoughts? BTW she loves the Vendetta! pete
Unfortunately the Vendetta is only offered in the -12 length to weight ratio, so she could go up in length to a 31" 19 oz. She could also consider sticking with the 30" length and go to the DeMarini CF5 which is offered in a -11 so it would be 19 oz. Here is a link to look at the DeMarini CF5. http://www.justbats.com/product/2013-demarini-cf5--dxcfs-fastpitch/15519/
Tom
My wife just joined her alumni soft ball team for the 2nd year and I want to buy her a bat. She is 5'5" 118 pounds. She does not have much power in her swing so the traditional slow pitch bats are out of the question for her cause of her strength, I bought her a 32" 20.5 for the batting cage but it seems to light and when she makes contact with the ball it just doesnt pop like it should, What kinda DeMarini bat should I get her? Dave
The 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane is an end loaded bat, better suited for a player with quick bat speed and lots of power. We recommend the DeMarini CF5 in a 32" 22 oz for her height and weight. It is more balanced for players who need to increase their bat speed.
Kara
My daughter has just moved to 14U and just broke her Easton Stealth which is a balanced bat. She is 5'4 135 ibs, very quick bat speed with power. I feel the CF5 Insane is a good replacement bat for her. Any other recommendations? Is a 32" 22 oz a good size? Blaze Dad
The 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane would be an excellent choice for a power hitter with good bat speed. The 32" 22 oz would be the recommended size.
Kara
Hi, my daughter is 5'2" and weighs 125 pounds. What do you recommend for size and weight for this bat? She has good bat speed and good power. cbrur
Based on that particular height and weight, our Bat Coach program suggests a 32" 22 oz. bat.
Nick
Will this bat be legal for the 2013 season in ASA and USSSA play? pittpride14
The 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane will be legal for play in USSSA until 9/1/13 and it will be legal for play in 2013 for ASA.
Nick
Is the DeMarini CF5 Insane better than the DeMarini CF5 Hope? cals
Both the DeMarini CF5 Insane and CF5 Hope are good bats. The CF5 Insane will be more end loaded than the CF5 Hope.
Damon
my daughter currently is swinging the easton stealth 32/22 but it is time for a new bat as hers has lost its pop. Which bat would you recommend. She is 5'4" and weighs 128lbs. She has great bat speed. Bear
It's always recommend that a player stick with the same type of bat they have used in the past with the most success. In doing so, the player is much, much more likely to have continued success at the plate. I would recommend sticking with an Easton Stealth Speed in a 33" model.
Tyler
My sister is 8, 4-7 65 lbs, what size bat should she be using she has very quick hands and a lot of power ? CCB82
Based on her height and weight, a 30" bat is recommended with a weight between 17 and 20 ounces.
Tyler
Is this a new bat? Angie
This is a 2012 model. The newer 2013 model has the same model number but will have "2013" in the model name.
Tyler
With the weight of this bat being end loaded will it seem heavier? J-Dub
Yes, the 2013 DeMarini CF5 Insane will feel heavier. It is best suited for a power hitter.
Kara
my daughter is 5'1 & 135 pounds and she is swinging a 33'' 22oz she has good bat speed would it hurt her going up to a 33'' 23 oz rojo
The DeMarini CF5 has an end loaded swing weight. For her height and weight, the 33" 23 oz. would be a recommended length and weight.
Aubrey
My daughter is 5ft 100lbs she slams the ball with a 31" 22oz cheap Easton bat her coach said if she had a good bat like the CF5 Insane she would knock them to the fence. He also said get her a 31 drop 11. I can't find one. The closet thing I can find is a 31" 21oz just wondering if you think that would be to heavy? hype
If your daughter has good strength and above average swing speed with the 31" 22 oz bat she is currently using, then a 31" 21 oz DeMarini Insane would be a great option that she should definitely be able to maintain good bat speed and control with. A -10 is the only length to weight ratio the Insane is produced in.
Tyler
My daughter is 5'7 145lb and definitely a power hitter. She has swung a cf4 for the last 2 years(33'/23oz) do you think she would be ok swinging a 34'/24 cf5 insane or should she stay with a 33/23? john#21
When moving from a balanced bat to an endloaded bat, it's always recommend to stay with the same weight. Unless, she has swung a 34" Insane before with good bat speed and control. Then, I would recommend the 34" Insane.
Tyler
My daughter is 12yrs old 200+ lbs. She is a monster hitter and her batting coach suggested that she go up to a 32/23. With this bat being end loaded would this be okay? Joy
That's a very difficult question for us to answer without being able to see and analyze her swing with said bat. However, if she has above average power and above average swing speed, then she should be just fine with the DeMarini CF5 Insane.
Tyler

We are looking for another bat. She was using a 33" 23 oz. -10. Is the 34" 24 oz. too heavy for her? She is 5' 6" and weighs 145-150lbs. Beth
Using the Bat Coach feature on www.JustBats.com I was able to determine that she should be swinging a bat length of 33". The 34" is the next recommended size to move up to. Usually, a one ounce weight difference can be easily adjusted to, especially for the experienced hitter. The 2012 DeMarini CF5 Insane: DXCFI Fastpitch bat is currently available in a 34" 24 oz. size.
Brandon

Engraving the name on the barrel of the bat could cause damage to the composite material.
Kara

About the Brand

In 1992, DeMarini Sports had something to celebrate. The three-year-old company had climbed a rung on the proverbial ladder of success, moving its world headquarters from a dirt-floored barn to a slightly larger metal shack. "It was a big move for us," recalled Ray DeMarini from the batting cage of DeMarini Sport’s present-day Bat Industrial Complex. "The new shop was larger, more storm resistant, and -best of all- it had a heater."

In the early days, DeMarini Sports hardly made a blip on the radar screen of softball. With no retailers and virtually no advertising budget, DeMarini grew steadily by selling high-performance bats directly to customers. While established companies made "juiced" bats for the pros and ordinary bats for the public, DeMarini focused on making one line of high-performance bats for pros and amateurs alike. This approach, combined with a passion for the sport, led to the greatest innovation in softball history - the world’s first multi-wall bat: the DeMarini Doublewall.

Released in 1993, the DeMarini Doublewall was the world’s first multi-wall bat. Like a modern golf driver or oversized tennis racket, the Doublewall had a giant "sweetspot," which allowed average players to hit like pros. DeMarini’s sales exploded, and before long opposing bat manufacturers to notice. DeMarini - a homegrown company led by a softball fanatic - had shaken the establishment silly.

To understand the rise of the DeMarini Dynasty, you need to know Ray DeMarini. A cult hero among avid players, Ray DeMarini emerged on the professional softball scene at the age of 40, a veritable geriatric among younger players. With a scientific approach to training, a batting speed of 96 miles-per-hour and a bombastic attitude, DeMarini fast earned a reputation as a savage competitor.

In June of 1987, ESPN launched a nationwide search for a hardcore player to advise on a series of instructional softball videos. When approached by producer Erich Lytle, the biggest boys in softball repeatedly spoke of a five-foot-seven softball giant—Ray DeMarini. DeMarini had mastered reflex hitting, a technique that drops the ball squarely between the infield and outfield. Impressed with DeMarini's knowledge and scientific approach to training, Lytle not only hired Ray as an advisor—he hired him as the host. Together, they produced Ray DeMarini's Reflex Hitting System, ESPN's most successful home video to date.

Having garnered national recognition through ESPN, Ray turned his efforts toward designing a high-performance bat for the masses. To accomplish this, he needed an engineer. "Not just an engineer," he said, "but a boot-strapping rocket scientist who could build an empire with pocket change." Ray's call was answered by Mike Eggiman. Having grown up on a farm, Eggiman was adept at making the most of a situation. Case in point: the company's first piece of automated bat-making equipment had the heart of an abandoned washing machine.

With Eggiman as Chief Engineer, DeMarini Sports delivered a series of industry firsts: the first multi-wall bat (Doublewall Distance), the first high-performance bat for massive players (Fatboy) and the first high-performance youth bat (Black Coyote).

In 2000, DeMarini joined forces with Wilson Sporting Goods to develop the next generation of hitting technology. Ray believed it was a perfect fit, as both companies shared a vision of developing game-enhancing equipment for avid players. What’s more, the companies had complimentary products: Wilson was the leader in gloves, balls and protective gear, while DeMarini made the world’s finest bats. According to Chris Considine, Vice President/General Manager of Wilson Sporting Goods: "The thing that struck me most about DeMarini was their passion for sports and their true competitiveness.

Within a year, DeMarini unveiled the industry’s first concept bat, the $35,000 F1. Secured under lock and key at the DeMarini Bat Industrial Complex in Hillsboro, Oregon, the F1 served as a technological storehouse for future products, including DeMarini’s landmark Half & Half system.

In December 2001, 12 years after the genesis of DeMarini Sports, Ray DeMarini died of cancer in his Northwest Portland home. He was 55. The next summer, the Portland Metro Softball Association paid homage to the “King of Softball” with the dedication of Ray DeMarini Field. Formerly known as Delta #1, the field was DeMarini’s favorite place to test bats during the early days of business. Ray DeMarini—bat maker and player extraordinaire—was remembered for his high-performance softball bats and unwavering encouragement of everyday players. Today, a 40-foot sign announcing RAY DEMARINI FIELD graces the outfield, and an interpretive display chronicling Ray’s life greets players as they register for games.

More "Insane Dedication to Performance" is in store for tomorrow.
