Description

For the past several years, the CF4 has dominated discussions about the hottest bats on the market. This year, DeMarini raises the stakes by introducing a completely revamped successor, aptly named the CF5. The CF5 is built on the principle of geometric perfection. DeMarini has unveiled a new composite material, called TR3 Strut Composite, that imitates the structure of crystals which are one of the strongest and most stable compounds on Earth. The triangle formation inside the barrel provides a fixed ratio of sides and angles so it's strong, stable and predictable - without any unnecessary weight! The molecular structure of the TR3 Strut handle is designed to efficiently transition power from the hands to the barrel to give players balance and consistency with every swing. This two-piece design is engineered durable with a very high strength to weight ratio, and light enough to be worthy of Doublewall duty. A bat like this can't be plugged with any average end cap, so DeMarini engineered the new Geo Endcap to meet its needs. The Geo Endcap is full of load-balancing triangles and is designed to maintain the stiffness of the barrel while dampening vibration to give hitters an amazing feel, shot after shot! The CF5 also features Half and Half Technology that redistributes weight to give the bat optimal balance. This gives players the ability to swing faster with less effort; ultimately resulting in more power! DeMarini: Insane Dedication to Performance! The DXCFR features the USSSA 1.15 stamp and is legal for use in and beyond! The CF5 is backed by a Full Twelve (12) Month Manufacturer's Warranty. Free Shipping!

Pros: Great Grip. Don't get blisters anymore. Came from a TPX H2. Lots of pop. You can literally feel the trampoline effect on the bat. You are launching the ball, not hitting it. Half and half Doesn't have any sting AT ALL. Best bat I've ever had.

Pros: This bat is the next step up from the DeMarini 2012, in my opinion. It's legal for use in Travel Ball, so my son can use it, and he's hitting bombs left and right with it. He's been swinging the Voodoo 2k12, and just got this bat, its great! Reduced sting, barely any infact. The sweet spot is supberb and lets you know when you hit it. Get this bat. The 300 bucks is worth it. Any bat with this star quality, is worth it!

Cons: NONE! Good job DeMarini!

Pros: Outstanding bat. Got it for my son who plays 13U travel ball. Right out of the box he was hitting BB's into the outfield. Used Easton Speed last year and it does not come close to this bat, can't wait to see it in action in tournaments.

Cons: I've heard the USSSA marking will rub off after extended use. Only time will tell.

Pros: This is a good bat with a great sized sweet spot. If you ever get the ball in the middle of the sweet spot it will be a home run. I hit my first home run with this bat.

Cons: Every time you hit the ball it stings even if you have batting gloves on. The only time it doesn't sting is if you hit it in the exact center of the sweet spot.

Pros: This is an amazing bat great pop, well balanced but not like louisville slugger would recommend this bat to anyone that plays baseball contact hitters or power hitters this is a good bat for every one.

Cons: It has some sting if hit close to the handle but all bats do I would like to see one that doesnt.Only thing is that on my first pitch we smeared the usssa mark and we broke it in now we figured out that we have to send it in and get a new one

Pros: Replaced a Surge that broke in half after 10 games with the CF5. 1st impression is it feels like knife thru butter when hitting the sweat spot. Expect even more when it's broken in. Don't mistake this bats lack of feedback for lack of power. It's great.

Cons: Could not get at Justbats, out of 31" 23oz. Had to go to Dick's, Ugh.

Pros: Update. Have used the CF5 in 7 games now. Way better than the Surge that broke. Great grip. Hits going further, faster than before. Hit a 220' opposite field shot last weekend. Never done that before. Has not stung once.

Pros: grip.

Cons: ok, first of all this bat is nowhere near balanced it seems like 20 of the 23 ounces this bat has are in a little bunch at the end of the bat, second this is the most popless bat dm has ever made and it took at least 350-400 swings too break in and not much of a difference btw .im sorry demarini but this time, you messed up, hopin 2013 is better but im not takin that chance of buying, advantage CF4!!!!!

Pros: this bat is a FANTASTIC BAT, out of the wrapper pretty hot, believe me but when you break it in the ball will definitely FLY!! i took about 2 buckets of BP and thos bat was hitting about 280 right about where the DEM is in DEMARINI. but when its hit on the sweet spot and you have a lot of power the ball will absolutely FLY! i recomend this bat to contact/power hitters

Cons: grip is really tough use batting gloves weight is not 24 ov maybe about 25 but a great bat........................ i am not associated or work for DEMARINI at all.

Pros: Just bought for 12 yr old son. So far all things look good. Ball comes off the bat very well. Bought this and marucci blk. Previous bats: prodigy,cf4, easton stealth, mattingly the beast, combat b1,b2,b3. As I said above ball comes off the bat very well better than most of the above bats. Demarini makes a great products.

Cons: None so far but only have used it in 2 practices. Do not anticipate any. Not worried about paint chipping if and when it does happen, it's a bat that hits a ball and gets thrown on the ground and tossed in bat bags. Hope this helps. Definitely would recommend this bat to anyone.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the DeMarini CF5 Senior League Baseball Bat: DXCFR? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Does this bat have the new USSSA 1.15 STAMP that it needs for 2012 weiss
As of 7/20/2011 these bats do not have the USSSA 1.15 stamp on them.
Brett
What other bats are allowed for the 2012 youth baseball season besides the CF5? BCsixteen
That all depends on what organization you play in. Little League, USSSA, Pony, Dixie, etc. There are many different organizations out there with a variety of different rules and regulations. I don't want to give you any false information, but feel free to email us at support@beapro.com if you have any additonal details.
Mark
what bat is the better baseball bat for a twelve year old boy? The knew 2012 demarini voodoo or the demarini cf5 senior league baseball bat? Puma
That depends on who you ask. Both are great bats and are consistently among our top sellers. The CF4 and now CF5 have always been deemed as DeMarini's highest-end bat with the Voodoo a close second. The main differences between the two are that the Voodooo has an alloy barrel and composite handle and the CF5 is a full composite bat. Composite barrel bats have the tendency to slightly outperform alloy barrel bats. The Voodoo is also a drop 9, the CF5 is a drop 8, so there will be a difference in the length to weight ratio. In my honest opinion, you can't pick one of these bats as the "best" for a 12 year old.
Brett
What is a better boys senior league baseball bat the demarini cf5 or the 2012 demarini voodoo? Puma

Brett
is the composite material in the handle or the barrel? tourque
Both. The CF5 has a composite handle and barrel.
Josh
Does this bat now officially have the bpf 1.15 stamp? kfar
Yes. This bat is good to go and it has the USSSA BPF 1.15 stamp.
Brett
In your opinion, what is the better bat, Demarini 2012 CF5, or Louisville Slugger 2012 Vertex? Looking at 29" bat for my son who has been using a Miken Freak 28/19 for the past 18 months...need bpf 1.15 stamp... kfar
In terms of performance, both will be pretty similar. A lot of it comes down to personal preference. The Vertex will be stiffer than the CF5. Stiffer bats like the Vertex are often preferred by power hitters. Bats with more flex like the CF5 are often preferred by contact hitters. The Vertex also has a 2 3/4" barrel which is slightly larger than the 2 5/8" barrel on the CF5. There is also a difference in the length and weight between the two. A 29 inch CF5 will weigh 21 ounces. A 29 inch Vertex will weigh 19.5 ounces. As you can see, there are a lot of variables and one really isn't better than the other.
TJ
Does this bat have the stamp now? Mark
Yes, this bat has the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp on the barrel of the bat.
Todd
Is this bat approved for Babe Ruth? nickname
It is not approved for Babe Ruth, because it has a 2 5/8" barrel. Babe Ruth is Little League and requires a 2 1/4" barrel size.
slaphappy
I was wondering im thinking about whats better for a 13 yearold baseball player whos good but needs a better bat for smooth swiningin and power the cf5 or 4 or voodoo redsox34ortiz
Both are excellent bats. Both are 2 piece, the Cf5 is a 2 piece all composite, where the Voodoo has an alloy barrel and composite handle. it comes down to preference.
lkh
Wait wait wait... it shows right on the bat that it has the 1.15 USSSA stamp.. why'd you say it didn't? kz
At that time this bat did not have the stamp. This bat DOES have the USSSA stamp.
Kris
is this a BBCOR bat? jonny
No. Senior League bats are not required to meet BBCOR standards. BBCOR only applies to adult baseball bats.
Sean
this is legal in 2012 right j
This has the new USSSA stamp making it legal for 2012.
Jeff
My son is 13 in oct. Small kid 85 lbs 4ft 10in we test hit 4 bat sizes yesterday and believe it or not he hit the best with a 31in 28 oz easton which you would think be very heavy for him.at 68 mph over 250 hits. He hit more solid then the lighter bats that he tried. Do u think a 32in 24 oz would work for him if he chokes up and he could use it for 2 years? Denver Blinn
Most kids don't like to choke up on the bat. If he is comfortable with the 32 inch than he would be fine. I receommend a 31 inch bat. You could probably do a -8 if he is that strong.
K.B.
My boy is a 13yr old major player and last year he used a Speed -8 30". He likes the composite "pop" and I like CF5 32" -8 for him this year, so do you think the 2" and 2oz. increase is to big of a jump? BatpoorDAD
That's a difficult question to answer without being able to see your son swing. If he displayed good bat speed and control with his Speed last year, then he shoud be okay moving up a couple ounces and an few inches. It is always recommended to move an ounce or two in weight as players get closer to the High School level. I think the 32" CF5 would work just fine for him.
John
From buying them for my older son,I know the CF5 -3 BBCOR has less pop than the CF3 and CF4. But what about the senior -8 1.15 BPF model compared to equivalent CF3 and CF4. As the CF3 is legal for him I may try to get a used CF3 rather than a CF5. Please comment. Scott
There is a difference with the BBCOR bats, because of the requirements, they don't have quite the same pop the BESR models do. Same with the 1.15 BPF, due to the standards the bats are required to meet. That being said, the CF5 is is getting some pretty good feedback.
LKH
My son is 12, weighs 130 lbs. and is 5' 2". Is a 32" 23 ounce bat the idea size for him? mookie
This would be a good size for his height and weight. If he is a strong hitter I would recommend a 32" 23 oz.
Kara
I am 5"3 115 pounds and strong i was thinking of getting the cf5 or cf4 but they might flex to much so now i am leaning towards a b3 31/23 what is your preference on that connor7
I personally like the feel of the CF5, it does have some flex to it but it is going to have a lot of pop as well
Sean
What is the typical "break in" for the CF5 -8 Coach Dave
You should take about 100-200 swings off soft toss or a tee, rotating the barrel about a 1/4inch every swing to break the bat in. Make sure to not use the bat in a batting cage that uses yellow dimpled balls as they can damage the composite materials.
Kara
Which bat would you buy for your 10yr old son to give him the most pop? This bat or the new Easton S series? Greg
Both bats are going to be top of the line composites with a ton of pop! It really is going to come down on personal preference.
Gary
what is bpf 1.15 is this mean that it will have less pop than last years bats leage
The BPF stands for Ball Performance Factor, it is a new testing that all bats pass this test to be approved for USSSA baseball.
Bill
trying to decide between the -8 and the -10 31inch. 13 year old boy above average strength oregojoe
If he is above avg strength, go for the -8. If he plans to play in high school they have to swing a mandatory -3. The -8 would be good to start getting him ready for that heavier weight.
Linda
My 12 Year old has swung a 30" Vexxum for 2 years now. From all the comments he should move up. Looking at the CF5 31" drop 8..live in Chicago, can be cold in the Spring..how will a 100% composite bat perform/hold up in cold weather? Dave
Personally, I would have an aluminum or wood backup for cold weather.
Linda
My son is 12 yrs old, 5'10" and weighs about 140 lbs. I am considering the CF5 with a drop 8 or the Voodoo with a drop 5. He currently swings a 32" drop 10. Is the added 5oz too large of a jump for him? The CF5 -8 does not come in a 33" and I wanted him to move from a 32" to a 33". Thanks! TVR
This will depend on the player. Jumping 5 ounces will make his swing slow down a bit and may be tough for him to get around the ball. I would suggest looking at a -8 bat and let him get use to that weight and move to a -5 in a year or two.
KG
Beginning Jan 1, 2012...will this bat have a stamp indicating that it is "Approved for play in Pony Baseball" and also a stamp indicating the year manufactured? CoachD
We haven't been notified if the big barrel version will have a Pony League baseball stamp. However, the 2 1/4 inch model is approved for Pony League.
Kara
I need a bat that has "approved for play in PONY baseball" stamped on it along with the "NPF 1.15" stamp. Is this bat Pony League approved? Hern
This bat has the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp on it.
Linda
2-Questions 1- Bat is ok for USSSA 12Y 2- Can i get 30' 24 OZ Chris
Yes this bat is approved and does have the USSSA stamp. That size is not available in a -6.
KG
What leagues are requiring the 1.15 stamp. AJ
Almost all of them. If you are in doubt check with your league to be sure.
Linda
The new Pony rules require bats to be stamped Pony approved, 1.15 and year made.I cannot find a bat anywere that has this on the bat. Tom
This bat is a big barrel, is that allowed in your league? Pony League bats we have, are all small barrel bats. This one has all the markings you require, 2012 COMBAT B3 Gear Retro: GEARYB2 -12 Youth
Linda
Is the 32" 24oz. cf5 legal for use in the 13-15 year old babe ruth league JL
Yes it is legal in Babe Ruth leagues
John
Is this bat legal for 13 year olds in Little League? CF5. -8. Bat has print of usssa 1.15 NPR Bill L
No. Any composite bats must be BBCOR certified if you are in the Junior League Division. If you play in the Major Baseball Division the barrel size must be 2 1/4 inches.
Kara
Is this bat balanced or more end weighted ? drhawkin
This is going to swing more balanced than end weighted.
John
My son is 12. He is 140 pounds and he is 5"6. Is a 32" 24 oz the right size for him Allen
That sound like a perfect size for him.
Shelbe

If your son plays in USSSA, then yes.
Shelbe
Does this bat have the new USSSA 1.15 STAMP that it needs for 2012 MELANIE
Yes, this bat will feature the USSSA BPF 1.15 stamp on the bat.
John
I am looking for a good solid bat for my 12 year old son playing in a U13 select league. I was wondering what the USSSA 1.15 Stamp; Legal for Use in 2012 really means. I was told that this rating was to not make a alloy bat with no more advantage than the sweet spot of a wooden bat (because of reaction time). If this is the case, then what is the advantage of the higher end bats? Thanks Jim
The 1.15 BPF stamp is a rating which means Bounce/Ball Performance Factor. An alloy or composite barrel bat will have more pop than a wood bat. A wood bat "wraps" around the ball creating less pop, alloy and composite barrel bats do not do this. Higher end bats will have better materials and will be more durable throughout the season.
KG
is this bat hot out of the wrapper and is the -8 32 in 24oz BBCOR bat Big Mike
This will not be a BBCOR bat. BBCOR bats are -3 only. This bat will need a break in since it has a composite barrel.
KG
What happens when it gets cold out? Does the bat lose performance? wsw
Bats do not lose performance, but baseballs tend to get really hard in cold weather and that can damage the bat.
Shelbe
is this bat approved for little league junior divison 2012 ball buster
The DXCFR is not constructed for little league. For little league approved bats see the 2 1/4 inch barrel bats at Justbats.com.

I'm 13 and live in Arkansas I just moved up to Babe Ruth and I need to know if it is legal to use this bat. P.S. Also considering a 2012 Rawlings 5150 Both 32in. 22oz. Which do you think I should use? Stokers 2011
Based on the information I have, this particular bat would not be legal for use in the Babe Ruth league. It is a full composite bat, which means it would need to be BBCOR certified in order to be used in Babe Ruth. A BBCOR certified bat will be an adult -3 bat and not a 'senior league' bat. However, since the Rawlings 5150 is an all alloy bat, it will be legal for use. I would recommend checking with your league official though, since each individual league can have their own rules.
Jennifer
I've seen lots of other kids with composite bats, and I live in the Northwest where it is very cold and rainy, so I don't know if it would be ok for play Harlan
The basic rule of thumb is that the composite bats shouldn't be used in anything under 55 degrees. That is the point when you run a higher risk of cracking the bat due to the hardened core of the baseball.
Derek
Is this bat legal for use in Pony League? I'm looking for a good big barrel composite bat. What bat would you recommend for a price around $200? John
The 2012 DeMarini CF5 is approved for Pony League. It is one of the best two-piece composite bats on the market.
Kara
Is this bat balanced or swing lighter than it is supposed to? Reed
The CF5 features Half and Half Technology that redistributes weight to give the bat optimal balance. This also gives younger players the ability to swing faster with less effort.
Damon

Damon

The 2013 DeMarini CF5 uses upgraded composite compared to the 2012 model. It will be higher performing and more durable.
Nick
What does that mean that I must break in my bat? jane
Composite bats like the 2012 DeMarini CF5 require a break-in period. We recommend taking 100-200 swings off of a soft toss or tee. Rotate the barrel about a 1/4 inch each swing. We also recommend not to use a composite bat in batting cages that use yellow dimpled balls.
Kara
Can I use a composite baseball bat for all hitting like batting cage or BP? joey
You can use a composite barreled bat in batting practice, but we advise against using your bat to hit yellow cage balls because they are more dense than a regular baseball.
Tom
I bought a 30" 22oz. DeMarini CF5 for my son. He is 11 years old and 5' 1" tall. Is this right weight for him? Bob
For an 11 year old boy standing a 5'1". This 30" model 2012 DeMarini CF5: DXCFR Senior League bat would be a perfect length. As far as weight this -8 should be fine for him if he is experienced in the game at all. If this is his first year of playing baseball I might recommend a -10 or -12 drop.
Brandon
Is this a big barrel? sean
Yes, this 2012 DeMarini CF5: DXCFR Senior League bat will have a barrel diameter of 2 5/8".

My son is 11. He is 5' & 90 lbs. He has a 2 1/4" CF5 and it's 2.5 oz. heavier than stated and end loaded. Is the 2 5/8" barrel diameter heavier than stated? Is it more balanced or end loaded? What size do you recommend? Crutch1010
Using the Bat Coach feature on www.JustBats.com I was able to determine that your son should be swinging a bat length of 30". The 2012 DeMarini CF5: DXCFR Senior League bat is currently available in a 30" 22 oz. size with the 2 5/8" barrel diameter. This bat is a two-piece fully composite design. It will have a very balanced swing weight and not feel end loaded at all.
Brandon
Is this bat actually heavier than the stated 22OZ.? The 2 1/4 CF5 is 2.5 oz heavier than the stated 20 oz. Crutch1010
All bats are weighed prior to the final stages of production which include the addition of the endcap, grip, final coat of paint, decals, and sometimes the knob. Because of this, most bats will be a little heavier than the advertised weight.
Tyler
My son is 10 and plays in ECTB travel tournaments. Can these bats be used in those tournaments? Is it a big barrel bat. S
According to the limited ECTB rules I found online, the 2012 DeMarini CF5: DXCFR would be legal for play as they do not say anything about this type of bat being illegal.
Tyler
My son league age 10 with a July birthday. Last year he used a CF4 30" -11. We are thinking about the 2012 CF5 30" -8. He is 5' and weighs approx. 95lbs. Do you feel that that bat would be too heavy? Aaron
If he had good swing speed and bat control with his 30" -11 CF4, then he should be just fine with a 30" -8 CF5.
Tyler
My son is 11 years old and is 5', 82 lbs. He currently uses a 30" wood bat. Will this bat feel lighter and be much easier to swing? How does it compare to the Easton S3 30" 20 oz. bat? Fred
The 2012 DeMarini CF5 will be much lighter swinging and more balanced than a wood bat. The CF5 is a two-piece bat that is fully composite. The Easton S3 is a one-piece bat that is fully alloy. The CF5 will have some flex and the S3 will be stiffer swinging. Performance wise, they are going to be very similar. Both bats have a ton of pop.
Nick
Will justbats.com ever have another 31 inch in stock again? I really want one! McLovin'

I had a 31" 23 oz. CF5 last year at age 12. I'm looking for -5 with similar swing weight/balance. There are so many bats, which one best describes my needs? I don't see CF5 -5. Was my -8 CF5 considered stiff? It seemed balanced to me. Garret
The 2012 DeMarini CF5: DXCFR Senior League -8 bat was a two-piece design. It should not have felt stiff. It was very balanced. The 2013 Rawlings VELO: SLVEL5 Senior League bat will be a -5 that is very balanced and easy to swing.
Brandon
I had 31" 23 oz. DeMarini CF5 -8 last year and was 12. I'm looking for a 30" 25 oz. -5, with similar swing performance. Would the Demarini or any brand fill my needs. Garret
The 2012 DeMarini CF5: DXCFR Senior League bat will be the -8. The 2013 DeMarini Voodoo: DXVD5 Senior League should be a bat you should check out. It is a -5 with some end load. Power hitter's love this bat. It will be a two-piece design like the CF5 but with some added barrel weight.

The 2012 DeMarini CF5: DXCFR Senior League will be a two-piece fully composite bat.

The 2012 DeMarini CF5: DXCFR is discontinued. We will not be getting any more sizes in stock.
Tyler
Is this bat fully compostie and legal for little league play? kduff
Yes, the DeMarini CF5: DXCFR is full composite. No, it would not be legal in Little League because it is a full composite youth big barrel bat.
Tyler
Which bat do you recommend? This one, or the newer Cf5 (the white one). Cool
Both the DeMarini CF5: DXCFR Senior League and the newer Cf5 Senior League will have the same swing feel and balance. The newer CF5 will have a newer TR3 FLO composite. Both bats are very good designs.
Brandon
Hey I play travel baseball and I'm 13 years old. I need a new -8 big barrel. I'm deciding between the DeMarini CF5: DXCFR or the Easton XL1, both are size 31" 23 oz. Which bat should I get? scrap
The DeMarini CF5: DXCFR Senior League and 2013 Easton XL1: SL13X18 Senior League are both two-piece fully composite bats that are very high performing. The CF5 is well balanced, whereas the XL1 has an extended barrel and is end loaded. Typically, contact hitters prefer a balanced bat, and power hitters prefer a more end loaded bat.
Katie
Is the composite going to make any difference in how long the bat would last or make it have better pop? koexeman
The TR3 Strut Composite in the DeMarini CF5: DXCFR Senior League allows the bat to perform at a high level for a longer period than bats with alloy barrels. But composite barrels are not proven to outperform alloy, and this CF5's performance is capped by the BPF 1.15 certification.
Mac
Is this bath allowed in Little League for AAA and Majors? Masx
The DeMarini CF5: DXCFR Senior League bat would not be allowed in the Major Division of Little League Baseball. Only bats with 2 1/4" barrel diameters are allowed in that division, and this bat features a 2 5/8" barrel diameter. For questions concerning the legality of a bat, it is always recommended to contact a coach or League Representative.
Mac
Where do they sell the -5 32/27 CF5 in the 2012 model? cj
DeMarini does not produce the CF5 in a -5 drop. They offer the DeMarini Voodoo and Vexxum in a -5 drop.
John
Is this bat end heavy? Also, when will you have the 30 inch in stock? baseballer
The DeMarini CF5: DXCFR Senior League has a slight end loaded feel. It is a discontinued model and we will not receive more inventory. The 2013 DeMarini CF5: DXCFR Senior League and the 2014 DeMarini CF6: DXCFR Senior League are available in a 30" 22 oz.

About the Brand

In 1992, DeMarini Sports had something to celebrate. The three-year-old company had climbed a rung on the proverbial ladder of success, moving its world headquarters from a dirt-floored barn to a slightly larger metal shack. "It was a big move for us," recalled Ray DeMarini from the batting cage of DeMarini Sport’s present-day Bat Industrial Complex. "The new shop was larger, more storm resistant, and -best of all- it had a heater."

In the early days, DeMarini Sports hardly made a blip on the radar screen of softball. With no retailers and virtually no advertising budget, DeMarini grew steadily by selling high-performance bats directly to customers. While established companies made "juiced" bats for the pros and ordinary bats for the public, DeMarini focused on making one line of high-performance bats for pros and amateurs alike. This approach, combined with a passion for the sport, led to the greatest innovation in softball history - the world’s first multi-wall bat: the DeMarini Doublewall.

Released in 1993, the DeMarini Doublewall was the world’s first multi-wall bat. Like a modern golf driver or oversized tennis racket, the Doublewall had a giant "sweetspot," which allowed average players to hit like pros. DeMarini’s sales exploded, and before long opposing bat manufacturers to notice. DeMarini - a homegrown company led by a softball fanatic - had shaken the establishment silly.

To understand the rise of the DeMarini Dynasty, you need to know Ray DeMarini. A cult hero among avid players, Ray DeMarini emerged on the professional softball scene at the age of 40, a veritable geriatric among younger players. With a scientific approach to training, a batting speed of 96 miles-per-hour and a bombastic attitude, DeMarini fast earned a reputation as a savage competitor.

In June of 1987, ESPN launched a nationwide search for a hardcore player to advise on a series of instructional softball videos. When approached by producer Erich Lytle, the biggest boys in softball repeatedly spoke of a five-foot-seven softball giant—Ray DeMarini. DeMarini had mastered reflex hitting, a technique that drops the ball squarely between the infield and outfield. Impressed with DeMarini's knowledge and scientific approach to training, Lytle not only hired Ray as an advisor—he hired him as the host. Together, they produced Ray DeMarini's Reflex Hitting System, ESPN's most successful home video to date.

Having garnered national recognition through ESPN, Ray turned his efforts toward designing a high-performance bat for the masses. To accomplish this, he needed an engineer. "Not just an engineer," he said, "but a boot-strapping rocket scientist who could build an empire with pocket change." Ray's call was answered by Mike Eggiman. Having grown up on a farm, Eggiman was adept at making the most of a situation. Case in point: the company's first piece of automated bat-making equipment had the heart of an abandoned washing machine.

With Eggiman as Chief Engineer, DeMarini Sports delivered a series of industry firsts: the first multi-wall bat (Doublewall Distance), the first high-performance bat for massive players (Fatboy) and the first high-performance youth bat (Black Coyote).

In 2000, DeMarini joined forces with Wilson Sporting Goods to develop the next generation of hitting technology. Ray believed it was a perfect fit, as both companies shared a vision of developing game-enhancing equipment for avid players. What’s more, the companies had complimentary products: Wilson was the leader in gloves, balls and protective gear, while DeMarini made the world’s finest bats. According to Chris Considine, Vice President/General Manager of Wilson Sporting Goods: "The thing that struck me most about DeMarini was their passion for sports and their true competitiveness.

Within a year, DeMarini unveiled the industry’s first concept bat, the $35,000 F1. Secured under lock and key at the DeMarini Bat Industrial Complex in Hillsboro, Oregon, the F1 served as a technological storehouse for future products, including DeMarini’s landmark Half & Half system.

In December 2001, 12 years after the genesis of DeMarini Sports, Ray DeMarini died of cancer in his Northwest Portland home. He was 55. The next summer, the Portland Metro Softball Association paid homage to the “King of Softball” with the dedication of Ray DeMarini Field. Formerly known as Delta #1, the field was DeMarini’s favorite place to test bats during the early days of business. Ray DeMarini—bat maker and player extraordinaire—was remembered for his high-performance softball bats and unwavering encouragement of everyday players. Today, a 40-foot sign announcing RAY DEMARINI FIELD graces the outfield, and an interpretive display chronicling Ray’s life greets players as they register for games.

More "Insane Dedication to Performance" is in store for tomorrow.
