Pros: This is a (-8) bat - I had it professionally weighed. It's an excellent bat for game and BP (off real baseballs). It's weight is mostly in the meat of the barrel, so it might lag or angle down through the hitting zone for the younger players.

Cons: None - wish they made a black version.

Pros: Big sweet spot, "miracle" pop to weight ratio (not weight to length), makes your swing faster. If you are trying out for a team or just want to look good when playing THIS IS THE BAT!

Cons: You have to adjust your swing because this bat is so light, barrel feels a little thin and you need to get a grip (ex: tennis racket grip) because it does sting. One last thing, this bats weight is not consistent so one out of every 5 buyers will get one that feels heavy so it's a little bit of a lottery

Pros: I got this bat a month before little league started so I could work on my upper body strength and bat speed. This is the third I've had I had a couple of them when I was younger and now I've gotten another and it's great. It's also pretty cheap so you don't buy a $60 bat and then just snap it.

Cons: Breaks pretty easily.

didnt last long little league mom parent

Pros: Brought this as an exact replacement on one my son enjoyed using but had shattered. They said the bat would arrive btwn Thurs & Fri...arrived Thurs. Early is always good! Great pop, gets great hits Unfortunately the bat shattered in the 1st game...not their fault, its always a risk with wood bats did get a double and a triple off of it but 3rd at bat it shattered on an inside pitch. I called customer service and they were very pleasant and professional. As a courtesy they credited me $10 bcz the bat had gone on sale after I purchased it, and have given me a 10% discount towards a future purchase. I will definitely be using them again!!

Cons: Wood is alwsys risky!

Tobacco juice RichieB Other

Pros: My dad was a professional baseball player in the 1920s and 30s. When he bought me this bat, he rubbed tobacco juice on it with a cloth until it was a deep amber color. He said it made the bat last longer. I used that bat for several years and do not remember ever breaking it. It was pretty neat having a personalized slugger. He also made shallow grooves up and down the handle with a folded bottle cap to improve the grip.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Louisville Slugger Ash Wood Youth Baseball Bat: MLB225YB? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

My son just purchased athe 225YB Louisville Slugger wooden bat that says powerized next to the emblem It is the 30 inch bat. He really would like to know whose autograph is on the bat. It is not a very clear autograph He It says GRAND SLAM then the autograph and then the words YOUTH BASEBALL He would really like to know if possible what people signed this particular bat. We appreciate your help with this. .
There are various player signatures on all the Louisville Slugger 225YB youth bats. The most common are Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Evan Longoria, Dustin Pedroia and Manny Ramirez. Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez's signatures are clear as day and easily identifiable. Derek Jeter's may be a little sloppy with several big loops, but you should be able to recognize the cursive "D" and "J" in his name. Dustin Pedroia's is not very legible, but it has a large "D" followed by what looks like a lowercase "t" then a uppercase "P". Evan Longoria's has an obvious "E" at the beginning and a "#3" engraved under the signature. I hope this helps.
Mark
I have heard from teamates who have this bat that when they bought it at the store all the bats weights felt different. Is there a way i can buy it here and know the exact weight of the bat i am buying? duffy
No two bats are exactly the same due to the moisture and density of the wood. The weights are approximately a -4 length to weight ratio. Meaning they can vary an ounce either way. For instance,a 29 inch bat, could be as light as 24 ounces or as heavy 26 ounces. The bats aren't marked with the exact weights.
Linda
I have a 13 yr old. He is 5' 3" tall. this yr he is on 90' bases. He swings a 32" 20 ounce metal bat. What size and weight wood bat would you suggest. Steve
It is really a personal preference, I would look at a -5 or a -6 sized wood bat
John
Is this bat little league approved and what is the BPF on this bat? Big P
Yes. You can use this wood bat in Little League. Wood bats are not required to be tested for BPF. BPF1.15 places an upper limit on a bat's springiness ("trampoline effect") as compared to that of a rigid wall, which equals BPF 1.00. Wood bats are virtually inelastic, with values of slightly more than 1.00.
Tyler

Tom

The weight of all wood bats is an approximation, as different types of wood can be used in each bat.
Kara

Yes, Louisville does get most of their wood for their wood bats from Pennsylvania and other northeastern states.
Robert
The description of the Louisville Slugger ash bat says it is approximately -3 to -4 while the Rawlings ash bat says it is -7 to -8. What is the reason for the large weight difference in the two bats of the same price of $29.99? Dave
Not all wood bats are the same and different cuts of wood can vary greatly in consistency. The Louisville Slugger Ash Wood Bat: MLB225YB Youth bat does have a longer taper and thicker handle, which both attribute to a heavier weighted bat than the Rawlings Ash Wood Bat: 242J Youth bat.
Tyler

Hi, I'm a thirteen yr old that's 5'11 and weighs about 150. I was wondering what size and weight wood bat should I use. I am also playing 14u travel ball this year so I have to use a drop 3. JD
Based on your height and weight we would recommend using a 32" bat. Most wood bats are not going to be a specific weight. This one, the Louisville Slugger Ash Wood Youth Baseball Bat (MLB225YB), is going to be a youth bat so it will have an Approximate -4 to -5 Length to Weight Ratio. Most adult bats are going to have an approximate -2 to -3. I would probably recommend that you get an adult bat so you do not have to buy two bats.
Carter

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
