All of the bats you mentioned are pretty well balanced BBCOR model bats so they will have similar feeling swing weight. The BBCOR certifications on all these bats also limits the performance or "pop" that the bats are capable of; because of this, factors such as sweet spot size and feel at contact are often the biggest difference between bat models.

Preference between the 2015 Marucci CAT 6 BBCOR Baseball Bat (MCBC614) and the 2014 DeMarini Voodoo BBCOR Baseball Bat (DXVDC) would come down to which style you like more. Both could be used by power hitters. If you like an end-loaded feel, you should go with the Voodoo. If you like a balanced model or may need the added bat speed at times, I would go with the Cat 6.

It's all about what you are most comfortable with at the plate. This is completely normal for the Cat6. The reason you hear that particular sound is because of the vibration reducing damper that is unique to the Cat6 line. The vibration-reducing damper is absorbing and trapping all of the vibrations that are being produced in the bat, in turn producing this deadening sound. This is normal and is in fact, technology at work...

Ultimately, it will come down to a few things: alloy vs. composite and also a one-piece vs. a two-piece bat. Alloy bats, like the CAT 6, are best right out of the wrapper. They will not require a break in but performance will taper off the more the bat is used. Composite bats, like the CF7, require a break in before a bat will see its top performance. Once a composite bat is broken in, it will continue to get more responsive over time the more a bat is used. Lastly, a contact hitter will usually prefer a two-piece design because of the flex that it allows. Two-piece bats flex during your swing, causing a whip-like action that helps the head of the bat whip forward at the moment of contact, generating more inertia and power. A power hitter will tend to prefer a one-piece bat because the one-piece design isn't as forgiving as a two-piece. The Marucci CAT 6 BBCOR Baseball Bat: MCBC614 and the DeMarini CF8 are both great bats to consider; these two bats though are polar opposites in design. The Marucci Cat 6 will be a one-piece fully alloy bat with a balanced swing weight while the DeMarini CF8 will be a two-piece fully composite bat with a balanced swing weight. The CF8 will reduce vibration more and can perform slightly better in warmer weather (70+ degrees Fahrenheit) while the Cat 6 will hold up better in colder weather and can produce slightly more power (being a one-piece bat, it does not flex as much on impact but one will feel more vibration from off-center hits). Composite bats will require a break-in period (CF8) before being game ready while an alloy bat (Cat 6) will be ready to go out of the wrapper. These two bats will sound different as well. The Cat 6 will produce the typically "ping" sound while the CF8 will sound more like a wood bat.

Typically, contact hitters will prefer a balanced bat. Both of these bats are listed as balanced bats but the Select 716 from LS will feel slightly more end-loaded. As for something that will reduce vibration/shock, you will find that a two-piece bat will be better equipped to do this as these bats will flex on impact. For power, there is really not one BBCOR bat that will provide more than another. An end-loaded bat can help increase power slightly but for someone that is more of a contact hitter it may not be the best fit. As for the bat to get, the Marucci CAT 6 BBCOR Baseball Bat: MCBC614, all things consider, is a better all-around fit.

Based on your son's height and weight, we would recommend getting a 31 inch Youth Big Barrel/Senior League bat. The weight of the bat should be 23 ounces if going into 7th grade and 26 ounces if going into 8th grade. This will make the transition easier going into high school and the BBCOR area. As far as the bat to look into, there are many great options currently on the market. The Marucci CAT 6 and CAT 7 will be balanced while the DeMarini Voodoo RAW will be end-loaded. An end-loaded bat like the RAW would be better suited for a power type hitter typically. To select the correct bat, the questions one should ask would be: Do I prefer a balanced or end-loaded bat?, Do I prefer composite or alloy barrels?, and Do I prefer a two-piece or one-piece bat?
Once you are able to figure the preference then it becomes much easier to whittle down the field and select the best bat for your needs and personal preferences.

Marucci changed up the alloy being used in the CAT 7 models giving this bat a slight edge in overall balanced feel. If unsure which one to get, you could essentially order both and take dry swings with them and leave the plastic on the barrel. Unfortunately you would not be able to hit with either, regardless of how clean the barrel is, and then return one or both if not satisfied. Marucci does not offer a trial period of any kind on the CAT lineup of bats and thus we cannot accept back a used bat for an exchange or refund.

Marucci change the color as they continued to produce the Marucci CAT 6 BBCOR Baseball Bat: MCBC614. It did not change anything as far as performance or composition. It is just a color change.

Unfortunately the Marucci CAT 6 BBCOR Baseball Bat: MCBC614 does not feature the knob customization. A quick way to distinguish your bat from others would be to use some electrical tape on the handle.
