How long does it take to break it in?
I recommend taking 150-200 full contact swings with the 2013 DeMarini CF5: DXCFR Senior League. Start with about 40% power on your first 50 swings, eventually increasing power as you go along. After each swing, you should rotate the bat 1/4" so all of the materials have a chance to break-in.

The recommended size would be 30 inches. A lot depends on your current bat speed with your VooDoo. If you have good bat speed then you are probably ready to move up to a 30 inch bat.

I am 5'6" x 126 lbs 13U (in 7th grade). Trying to decide between the 2012 DeMarini CF5 (-8) or if I should wait for the 2013 Easton XL Series (-8). Any advice on how the two products may differ? I hit for power and have good bat speed. Prefer a composite barrel. Have used one piece in the past, but like the feel of the balance swing the CF5 offered.

I'm 12 years old (a little over 5'6" at almost 130lbs). I've been using the 2011 CF4 32/21, with very hard line drives and HRs in about the 275' range. It sounds like you have a great plan down for the progression you need to reach the BBCOR -3 bats. That's a good jump from the -11 to a -8, but it sounds like with your hitting you will have no problem making that transition.

That all depends on a number of factors. 1) The size bat he is currently using. You don't want to go up more than 3 or 4 ounces in weight from what he is using now. 2) The type of bat he is currently using. It's always recommend that a player stick with the same type or brand of bat they have used in the past with the most success. In doing so, the player is much, much more likely to continue to have success at the plate.

If you're going in to the 8th grade, and given your size, I would recommend a -5 bat. This will help make for an easier transition to a -3 bat at the High School level.
How does this bat compare to the 2012 DeMarini Vexxum DXVXR Senior League bat in terms of balance? I've heard the DXVXR described as slightly end loaded, but I've found it is too much so for my son's taste. He's a 10 y/o, 4'8", 66 lb kid used to swinging a Louisville Catalyst 29/18. I'd be looking at this in a 29/19, but only if it is as balanced as the LS.

I would absolutely recommend a -8 model. It's always recommended to move up in weight as you get closer to the High School level. This will ultimately make for an easier transition when you have to use a -3 bat in High School.

I would recommend using the drop -10. Typically going up more than 1" or 1oz will require a longer adjustment period.

The -3 length to weight ratio will be what you have to use the following season in your freshman year of high school, but the -5 would be lighter to swing for your 8th grade year. Its up to you whether you want a bat you can use now and your freshman year or just for the upcoming season.

That is actually the hardest question for us to answer. It would be hard for us to say whether a 20 ounce bat will be too heavy without being able to see and analyze your son's swing. I recommend finding a 20 ounce bat locally and having him take some dry swings with it to get an idea of whether it's the right weight for him. It is normal to move up 1-3 ounces in weight with every new bat you get.

We recommend taking an average of 150 to 200 swings either off of a tee or soft toss starting at about 40% power and increasing the closer you get to the 200 hit mark. Also, make sure you rotate the barrel in between each hit and use the same balls you would normally use in a game.
