Questions and Answers for 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult

How does this Bat compare to the 2013 ExoGrid 3? What do you believe has greater balance and "Pop"?

The 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult and the ExoGrid 3 will be very similar in performance, but the VELO will be much more balanced.

I am mostly a contact hitter that can muscle out a double every once in a while. I also have pretty decent bat speed. Should I go with the Velo or 5150?

If you have above average bat speed, the 2013 Rawlings 5150 Alloy BBCOR: BBCA2 would be recommended. If you have average or below average swing speed, the 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO would be recommended.

I currently have the XL1 BBCOR bat. I swing a 32" model. I am 5'11" 164 lbs. and still growing. I am a power hitter but I swing for contact the majority of the time. Would you recommend me going with this bat or the XL1 again? And also what size?

It's always recommend that a player stick with the same type of bat they have used in the past with the most success. In doing so, the player is much, much more likely to have continued success at the plate. Thus, I would recommend sticking with the XL1 if you have had success with it. Based on your size, a 33" model is recommended.

Hey. I'm a 5' 10" and 165 lbs. I'm a sophomore in high school that hits for average with the occasional long ball. Which bat out of the Rawlings or Louisville Slugger line of bats do you think would best suit me?

It sounds to me like the 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult would be a good bat for you but I would go with the 2013 Louisville Slugger TPX Attack BBCOR. It would be perfect for you to elevate your game.

I am 5' 1" and 100lbs. I am more of a contact hitter, so what bat would be better for me the Rawlings Velo or the Rip-It BBCOR Air?

The 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult and the 2013 RIP-IT Prototype BBCOR AIR: B1303A Adult are both going to be very balanced one-piece alloy bats. It is really going to come down to personal preference on which one to get.

What is a better bat for a power hitter, 2013 Rawlings 5150 or 2013 Rawlings Velo? (I'm also 6'1" 200 lbs.)

Most power hitters don't like a bat that is super well balanced like the Rawlings VELO. The VELO is better suited for hitters with average to below average strength and swing speed. The regular Rawlings 5150 would be a better choice for a true power hitter.

Tyler Expert ·May 10, 2013

I'm 5'5' 120lbs with above average bat speed. I'm a contact/line drive hitter. What size should I get?

Given your size, I would suggest going with the 32" 29 oz. model of the 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult.

I am 6'1" 165lbs. I am more of a line drive hitter. What would be a better bat for me, the 2013 Rawlings Velo or the 2013 DeMarini CF5?

Both the 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult and the 2013 DeMarini CF5 will swing very similar. The DeMarini will have more pop, since it is a two-piece composite. With the height and weight given we suggest that you use a 33" 30 oz. bat.

Chad M. Expert ·May 04, 2013

Will the composite end cap make this bat go dead in cold weather? I had a composite bat before and it was dead after using a couple of times in cold weather.

No. However, we do not recommend using any composite bat in weather below 55 degrees because it makes the bat more susceptible to damage.

Damon Expert ·Apr 27, 2013

What is the difference between the 2012 and 2013 models besides the added composite at the end?

Besides the added composite at the end the 2012 Rawlings 5150 Velo will have a stiffer handle for a consistent feel.

I am 5'8" weigh 140 lbs and I am a contact hitter. I have never had a lot of power but I hit the ball the other way. What bat do you recomend the Marucci Black 2 or new Rawlings 5150 Velo. Also, I have the red Rawlings Velo right now but I've used it for a 150 games plus practices on top and the pop isn't there anymore.

I would suggest the Marucci Black 2. It is evenly balanced, has a huge sweet spot and it's two-piece technology hybrid design adds a flex to your swing to help you get through the zone faster, added more power to your ablities.

When do the Rawlings 2014 bats come out?

The 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult bat is a great model. The 2014 Rawlings line will come out at some point this year. As of now, we are uncertain as to when.

How come when I listen and compare the ping sound on the Velo/5150 to the Marucci Elite, the Marucci has more of a ping sound than the 5150's? Isn't the Marucci Elite composite while the 5150s are alloy? I'm a contact hitter looking for that ping similar to the Marucci CAT 5. Which bat is closest would you think out of these?

The 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult and the 2013 Marucci Elite BBCOR: MCBELI have an alloy barrel. The 2013 Marucci Elite BBCOR: MCBELI has a composite handle and three to four inches of composite material at the end of the barrel. The Marucci CAT 5 had a very distinct sound and would be difficult to duplicate. The 2013 Marucci Elite will most likely have the closest sound to the Marucci CAT 5.

I am buying a 7th grader his first BBCOR (-3) bat for middle school baseball. He is a small stature kid, weighs 80 lbs. But he is comfortable swinging 30 and 31 inch BBCOR bats. He likes the Rawlings 5150 and Rawlings VELO. Which one (5150 or VELO) would be better suited for a smaller kid who is predominantly a contact, line-drive hitter (not a home run hitter)?

The 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO will offer a faster swing speed, helping your son to generate more power on the ball.

What's the difference between the Rawlings Velo BBCOR: BBVELO adult and the 5150 VELO BBCOR BB51V? I've looked at them and read about them, and I can't find a difference between the two.

Being that the 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult is a newer model, it has the lower M.O.I than any other competitor. Which stands for Moment of Inertia. Which the lower the M.O.I. the faster the swing which adds power. The only other thing is that the 2013 Rawlings VELO now has a Composite end cap.

What is a better bat for power hitters, the 2012 Rawlings Machine BBCOR or the 2013 VELO?

The 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult will be more preferred by power hitters thanks to the one-piece alloy design.

If I have 91 mph batted ball speed which bat would be better for me, the 2013 Rawlings Velo or the 2013 Rawlings 5150?

The 2013 Rawlings VELO is going to be the better bat out of the two. It is very balanced and should make your bat speed even faster than it already is.

Which bat is better the 2013 Rawlings VELO or the Easton XL1?

Both the VELO and XL1 are going to be very high performing bats. Both of these bats fit different players. The Easton XL1 will be for power hitters and the Rawlings VELO will be for contact hitters.

After reading about both the 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR BBVELO Adult and 2013 Marucci Elite BBCOR: MCBELI, I would like to know which bat would be the one to go with?

The 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult bat will be a very balanced easy to swing bat. It will be a one-piece all alloy model. The 2013 Marucci Elite BBCOR: MCBELI Adult bat is Marucci's top of the line. It will also be very balanced. The Elite will be a seamless two-piece hybrid design. Both bats will be great for a contact or power hitter. Also, the Elite will have a patented unequal Aramid-Reinforced Grip that silences the sting and will feel super comfortable to swing.

For a 5'10" 142 lb. contact/power hitter with above average swing speed, would you recommend this bat? The 2013 Rawlings 5150 or the 2013 TPX ExoGrid3?

At your current size and swing speed ability I would have to say 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult bat would not be your number one choice. Go with the 2013 Rawlings 5150 BBCOR. It will have a one-piece stiffer feel than the 2013 Exogrid 3. It should also add to your power as well.

How does this bat relate to the 2012 Velo? Is it lighter? Does it sound the same? Is it just as good?

The difference between the 2013 and 2012 Rawlings VELO BBCOR baseball bat is that the 2013 model has a composite end cap and a more balanced, faster swing speed. Same sound.

Which bat is more similar to the Marucci CAT 5 BBCOR 32" 29 oz. with respect to balance and barrel size; the 2013 VELO or the 2013 Marucci Black 2?

For balance, the 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR will be more similar to the Marucci CAT 5. Marucci has also came out with the Elite which is their best balanced and performing bat. The Marucci Black 2 has a very slight end load, but it has a seamless two-piece hybrid design.

What is the difference between a Velo and the 5150? Which is better suited for a contact hitter?

The 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult bat will have a lighter more balanced swing weight than the Rawlings 5150. VELO is short for velocity. This bat will help improve that.

How many seasons or swings on the average, out the Velo?

The 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult bat is a one-piece all alloy model. Just as with any all alloy bat, this bat will not require any period of break-in. This bat will be the hottest it will ever be right out of the wrapper. I would not think you would see any problems or issues during season number one. The warranty on this bat is 12 months through Rawlings. I would say, trust the bat for as long as the warranty is offered.

I am currently swinging the new 2013 Voodoo, but I feel my bat speed has decreased. I'm not hitting gap to gap line drives anymore. Would this bat suit me better in the sense that it will increase my bat speed?

Rawlings states that the 2013 VELO BBCOR has the lowest M.O.I. on the market. Their testing shows that the lower the M.O.I., the faster the swing speed.

How does this bat compare to the RIP-IT Prototype-B1303A? Both seem to be tops for balance. Varsity HS player, tough time deciding.

Both the 2013 Rawlings VELO BBCOR: BBVELO Adult bat and the 2013 RIP-IT Prototype BBCOR AIR: B1303A Adult bat will be similar. They both will feature one-piece all alloy designs. Both are created to help the hitter gain the quickest and lightest swing weight possible. The RIP-IT comes with a 30 Day Love It or Return It program.
