Would this bat compare better to last year’s Easton S3 (SL13S310B) or would it be more similar to the Easton Rival (BG10XL) from a few years back? I noticed it is made from the same THT100 Scandium Alloy, but the older Rival had much more pop than last year’s model.
The 2014 Easton S3 BBCOR (BB14S3) would compare very similarly to the 2013 S3 (SL13S310B). The Easton Rival (BG10XL) is the earlier model of this bat before they came out with the Speed Series but it is similar in design and does feauture the THT100 alloy. We recommend a 30" 2014 Easton S3 (SL14S310B) for your son that is 57" tall. Typically a player that is 53" tall uses a 29" bat. However, if the smaller player is strong, they could use a 30' 20 oz. bat. The 2013 and 2014 models use the same THT100 alloy.

The 2 3/4" barrel diameter of the 2014 Easton S3: SL14S310B Senior League is not approved in quite a few leagues. The 2 5/8" barrel diameter of the SL13S310 is approved in most leagues that allow the use of a Big Barrel bat. The 2 3/4" barrel diameter is a larger hitting surface and provides a more forgiving design for a younger player. Eventually, players will have to move to the 2 5/8" barrel diameter regardless of the league.

We do not recommend using any non-wood bat, including the 2014 Easton S3: SL14S310B Senior League, in commercial batting cages that use yellow "dimple" balls. These balls are more dense than the game balls that the bats are designed to hit. Also, many manufacturers list in their warranty details that hitting these balls will void your warranty against defects.

My son uses the 2012-Easton-JBB11X3-X3-Jr-Big-Barrel and I'm looking for a comparable bat. He has good power but I was wondering would the new S3 help or hurt being that the XL is end loaded and S3 is more balanced. Would it throw off his timing too much? Or should I stick with the new 2014 XL. It will be for mostly coach pitch but by he end of season some kid pitch.
