My son loved the B3 and B4 Combat bats -10. He's 13, 90 pounds, and a contact hitter. We wanted to try to move him up in weight so got the Wanted 31/23. He's not hitting well at all with it and says it's too heavy. What COMBAT model is most like the B3 and B4 that he loved so much? nl27
The Wanted model would also offer a balanced swing weight, like the B3 and B4 models. So the issue might just be the actual weight. This 2015 COMBAT Portent G3 (PG3SL110) Senior League bat would be most similar in design as it's a one-piece composite model like the B3 and B4, but it's also a -10. The -8 version of this bat would be the (PG3SL108).

The drop weight of the bat can make a difference for the way the player swings. A -10 bat like the 2015 COMBAT Portent G3 (PG3SL110) will be slightly heavier but if the player can swing it with good bat speed it could produce more power. -12 bats would be lighter which means the player could swing it faster but would not have as much mass behind the hit.

With regard to the ounces, generally, you want to swing the heaviest bat that you can comfortably and consistently control. Choosing the weight of a bat will mostly depend on your preferences as well as strength, bat speed, and hitting technique.

Yes, the 2015 COMBAT Portent G3 Senior League (PG3SL110) would require a break in period. For bats with composite hitting surfaces, we recommend 150-200 hits off a batting tee or soft toss. It"s best to start off at about 40% power, and gradually increase. Also, be sure to rotate the bat a quarter of turn in your hands after every hit.

A contact hitter is going to be better served using a two-piece bat with a balanced swing weight. Both the COMBAT Portent G3 Senior League Baseball Bat w/ Lizard Skin Grip: PG3SL110 and the Easton MAKO Senior League Baseball Bat: SL15MK9 would be good fits based on the balanced swing weight design. With that said, the Easton MAKO Senior League Baseball Bat: SL15MK9 is going to be the more ideal choice out of the two bats because of the two-piece design (the Portent G3 is a one-piece fully composite design).
