All BBCOR bats, including the 2015 Easton XL1 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BB15X1) must adhere to the .50 BPF standard that is required for the bat to be able to be certified legal for play. The BBCOR certifications on all these bats limit the performance or "pop" that the bats are capable of, so an alloy bat and a composite bat will perform very similarly to each other in that sense. The main difference is that alloy bats have peak performance right out of the wrapper. They do not require any break in period but performance will taper off the more that the bat is used. Composite bats require a break in period before they will see their top performance. However, once it is broken in, it will continue become higher performing the more that you use the bat and loosen the composite fibers in the barrel. Therefore, a composite bat will hold its pop longer than an alloy bat. Senior League bats (also called Youth Big Barrel bats) will be higher performing than BBCOR models. This is because most senior league models have to feature a 1.15 BPF stamp, which is a higher number than the .50 BPF standard BBCOR bats have meet. The BPF or Bat Performance Factor relates the how much trampoline effect or springiness a bat has. The 1.15 BPF means that Senior League models have the ability to have more trampoline effect, so they will be higher performing than a BBCOR model.

We would suggest going with a 31" BBCOR model at your size and weight. The XL1 and the MAKO will be similar in their construction, but they will swing differently. Both bats will feature an extended barrel (the XL1 being a little longer), but the XL1 will have an end-load while the MAKO will be balanced. For a gap hitter, we would not recommend the 2015 Easton XL1 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BB15X1). The end-loaded swing weight tends to slow the swing of 1 and 2 hitters down considerably. The 2015 Easton MAKO BBCOR Baseball Bat (BB15MK) actually has a larger sweet spot and a more balanced swing-weight which should actually help your bat speed.

For bats with a composite hitting surface, like this 2015 Easton XL1 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BB15X1), we recommend starting with tee-work, progressing to soft toss/front toss and then to live pitching. Make sure to rotate the bat a quarter of a turn after each swing, and after about 150-200 reps with real baseballs (this can vary), your bat should be fully broken-in. Based on your height and weight, you could certainly go with a 33 inch 30 oz model as you move into high school. With that being said, I would stick with the 32 inch 29 oz. BBCOR until your sophomore year. You can always crowd the plate that first year to get better reach and most young pitchers will not be able to locate inside.
