The 2015 Easton XL3 Youth Baseball Bat (YB15X3) will swing very much the same as the prior year models. The 2015 XL3 will have updated bat materials compared to the 2011 or 2012 models. The performance and durability should be slightly better. I see many 9 year old players using 29" and 30" currently. Either one should swing fine for him.

In general, at their best, most bats will perform to around the same level if you put the same quality swing on similar pitches. The difference would be in the feel and the durability of the bats. The XL3 is an end loaded one piece alloy, while the MAKO is a balanced two piece composite, and they each offer an extended barrel. For a contact and power hitter I would recommend the MAKO because although it is balanced, for a contact hitter, it also features an extended barrel, for a power hitter, so the MAKO is kind of the best of both the speed series and the XL series by Easton.
