Wood bats are naturally heavier than non-wood bats. Therefore, I would recommend a 29" or 28" wood bat.

The Louisville Slugger Maple Wood (MLBHMYG) is a youth model. For that age we would suggest moving them into an a adult model. You could run into some durability issues using this model for a 14 year old.
What is the difference between this bat and the Louisville Slugger MLBM9YBH? Also, my 9 year old son swings a 29" -12 alloy, should I go with a 28" wood bat? He is 4ft 5in, 65 lbs.
The MLBM9YBH uses a higher grade maple than the MLBHMYG. Normally we would recommend a 29" bat based on his height and weight. However, wood bats are going to be much heavier so the 28" would be a better length for him.

I think so. This wood bat is a good bat for a younger player and is a good choice for his first wood bat.
