2014 The Easton XL1 Senior League will be end loaded like the youth model and will come in a -8 and -5 drop. The 2014 Easton MAKO will have the extended barrel like the XL1 but will be more balanced like the Easton S1. It only comes in 2 3/4" barrel and -10. If he is more of a power hitter I would recommend an Easton XL1.

The Easton Mako Senior League is a balanced bat with an extended barrel like the Easton XL1. The Easton XL1 is designed more for a power hitter because it is end loaded. The XL1 however only comes in -8 and -5 drop and the 2014 models will not be available until November 1st, 2014.

Although it is a composite design on the Mako, it will still come out of the wrapper with pop. Once you reach 150-200 hits off it though, it should be broken in. Just make sure to rotate the bat a quarter turn every 5 hits or so to assure the barrel receives equal swings for proper break-in.

In general if you are able to use the bigger barrel size and you feel the player benefits from that added size in their ability to square the ball up, that would be the better option. As the player progresses through the upper divisions of baseball, however, the 2 5/8 inch barrel diameter is the more widely accepted size. BBCOR certified bats that the player will need to use in high school and beyond are the 2 5/8 inch barrel diameter.

This 2014 Easton MAKO (SL14MKB) Senior League bat is not approved for any division of Babe Ruth baseball because it has a 2 3/4" barrel diameter. In order to use any bat with a composite barrel in Babe Ruth, the barrel cannot exceed 2 5/8" and it must be a BBCOR certified model. But BBCOR models only feature -3 length to weight ratios which is quite a bit heavier than the -10 length to weight ratio this bat offers.

The use of the larger barrel 2014 Easton MAKO (SL14MKB) over the 2014 Easton MAKO (SL14MK9) would just allow for more room for error. If you use the larger barrel you can miss a bit more and still may be able to salvage a hit. The trade off is that the 2 3/4 is less allowed in some leagues. Many leagues will have barrel size restrictions that will not allow the use of a 2 3/4 inch barrel diameter bat.

Unfortunately, whether a bat is legal or not is also dependent on the particular league they are in as well as their age. This 2014 Easton MAKO Senior League Baseball Bat (SL14MKB) is not approved in any division of Little League, Dixie, Pony, or Babe Ruth baseball because of the 2 3/4" barrel diameter. If the player is in a USSSA sanctioned league, you shouldn't have an issue. But concerning bat legality, it's best to check with a coach or league director.

The 2014 Easton MAKO Senior League Baseball Bat (SL14MKB) is not approved for play in the Little League organization because it features a 2 3/4 inch barrel diameter and it is big barrel bat that has a composite barrel and is not BBCOR certified. As far as sizing, two ounces is a jump but one that can be handled with hard work to get adjusted. The player will need to work with the bat to get used to the added weight. I cannot speculate if that size would work based on age and weight alone. Height and weight would be the more appropriate factors to consider when sizing the player.
