They have a different physical makeup than an actual baseball and react differently when hit and can cause problems with breakage. The 2014 Louisville Slugger Assault Senior League Baseball Bat (SLAS14-RX) and the 2014 Louisville Slugger Assault BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBAS14-RR) will both be made of the same ST+20 Alloy. Both bats feature a one-piece design with synthetic handles, however the taper on the handles will vary. The BBAS14-RR is a high-school and college certified BBCOR bat and thus will not perform as well as the SLAS14-RX which is designed for youth and senior league baseball, and is not approved for play in high-school and college.

The barrel wall thickness and the alloy material are the biggest differences between the 2014 Louisville Slugger Assault Senior League Baseball Bat (SLAS14-RX) and the 2014 Louisville Slugger Assault Junior Big Barrel Baseball Bat (YBAS14-RX). The Junior Big Barrel model is intended to be used for coach pitch style play and the Senior League model would be better for kid pitch.

My son has the 2014 27 inch 17 ounce Assault and the 2014 28 inch 17.5 ounce Demarini Vexxum. He has good bat speed and control with his S3 which is a 28 inch 18 ounce bat, but the Vexxum is too heavy for him even though it is a lighter weight and he never hits well with it. Would the 28 inch 18 ounce Assault be as balanced or heavy as the S3 or Vexxum? Or should he stay with the 27 inch 17 ounce Assault which has not produced yet? Henn
The 28 inch 18 ounce version of the Louisville Slugger Assault Senior League Baseball Bat (SLAS14-RX) is, over all, a balanced model but the S3 does tend to have a bit lighter swing weight. It should be something that the player could get used to and hopefully see success but it is tough to predict what would ultimately come down to how the player feels with the bat. I would order the bat, have the player swing it a few times without hitting anything and see how it feels to him. As long as it hasn't been used to hit, you could return it for a refund or exchange.

The Louisville Slugger Assault Senior League Baseball Bat (SLAS14-RX) is shipped to us from Louisville Slugger and marked as a 19 oz. bat. We do not weigh individual bats here. We just ship them directly to you. The Assault 29/19 should actually be 19 oz.

I made the mistake of buying this bat for my son last year in a 2 3/4" size barrel. It was a mistake because it's time for a new bat and I have bought three 2 5/8" barrel bats (CF7, Voodoo and S3) that can not match the distance my son gets when he hits with this bat so he will not use these. More than likely your son is benefiting equally from both. Additionally, the weight and feel of the bat may be exactly what fits him best and allows for the distance that you are seeing. The closest bat that we'd have to replace the Assault would be the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLO516X).

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.
After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.
The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.
The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.
