Pros: Our 10U girls are buying these left and right! Best bat for under $100. I carry a 30" to my batting lessons for younger girls still throwing aluminum to feel the pop of composite at -13. Got this years Mendoza (blue grip) for less than last years closeouts as Slugger changed their pricing on these! Way to go !

Cons: One piece bat doesn't have the whip of a two piece bat but at half the price who cares.

Pros: Looks nice & light weight. Easy to swing with.

Cons: When my daughter hits outside on a cool day. It hurts her hands with the vibation. She chock up on the bat & still hurts. We have another girl sbrought the same bat & doing the same things. But it's fine when hitting in a softball cages. I think the cold softball & cold bat is the problem. But we are in New England & this is a huge problem for us.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Louisville Slugger Mendoza Fastpitch Softball Bat: FPMD14-RR? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Is this bat too light to help my daughter hit for power? Larry
Depending on her age it is a possibility that the 2013 Louisville Slugger Mendoza Fastpitch: FPMD14-RR could hinder her power. But the balance and light swing feel of this model is a definite plus.
Brandon
My daughter has this bat in a 30" 17 oz. She has only had it for 6 months but has had a growth spurt. We love the bat and need to get a longer one. She is just shy of 5' tall. Should I get the 31" or the 32"? I don't want her outgrowing yet another bat so quickly. bridgette thomas
We recommend the 2013 Louisville Slugger Mendoza Fastpitch: FPMD14-RR in a 31", based on her current size. However, if she were to grow 2-3" or more in the next year, we'd recommend moving up to a 32". If she does not struggle with bat speed with her 30" 17 oz. model, I'd recommend making the move to a 32".
Katie
My daughter is 49 inches tall. She is 6 years old and is obviously growing like a weed. What size do you recommend? She weighs 53 pounds. Brandi
Based on her height and weight, we recommend a 28" model in the 2014 Louisville Slugger Mendoza Fastpitch (FPMD14-RR).
Jason
My daughter is a high school junior on the JV team. Her current TPX Mendoza composite bat is 3 years old and she needs a new one. Is this bat suitable for HS team softball players? Rich
The 2014 Louisville Slugger Mendoza Fastpitch (FPMD14-RR) is certified for play in USSSA. The -13 size will be pretty light for a high school player. I typically see more of an average -10 sizing at the high school level.
Brandon
My daughter is 13 years old, 5'6" and 135 pounds. Would a 33" 20 oz. be too much bat for her? I was thinking of buying her a 32", but at only 20 ounces maybe 33" is better? Tom
Based on her height and weight we recommend a 33" 20 oz. 2014 Louisville Slugger Mendoza Fastpitch (FPMD14-RR).
Kara
My daughter is 4'6" and weights 70 pounds. What size bat do you recommend? Michelle
We would recommend she use a 30" bat in the 2014 Louisville Slugger Mendoza Fastpitch (FPMD14-RR)
Aaron
My granddaughter just turned 14. She is 4' 9" to 5' 1" and 180 lbs. What size should she use? Mike
Based on your granddaughter's height and weight, I would recommend using a 32" in the 2014 Louisville Slugger Mendoza Fastpitch (FPMD14-RR).
Justin R.
My daughter is 55" and growing in height fast. She's 9 years old and weighs 80lbs, can I go with the 31" length? angie
Yes, you could certainly go with the 31" bat length. We would generally recommend a 30" size, although you can certainly go up or down 1" from our recommendation based on personal preference and if you want the bat to be better suited for her as she grows.
Kyle J.
My niece is 5'1" and weighs 115 lbs. She is turning 15. What size would work for her? turtle
The most appropriate size for her in the 2014 Louisville Slugger Mendoza Fastpitch (FPMD14-RR) would be a 32" bat length. If this bat seems too light for her, a more average 15 year old bat size is a 32/22.
Brandon
My daughter weighs 65-68 lbs and is 49 inches tall. What size of bat should she be using? Lilly
Base on her height and weight we recommend a 29" 16 oz. 2014 Louisville Slugger Mendoza Fastpitch (FPMD14-RR).
Kara
My daughter just turned 13, but she is 5'11'' tall and about 160 lbs. She just moved up to the 13-16 year old league this year, and I want to get her a bat that she can compete with. She can normally send a line drive to center field no problem. Is this a bat that will help her or hurt her? I am not up to date on the composite bats. Also what size bat would we get? Chasity
Based on the players approximate height and weight, the suggested length we would recommend would be 34 inches. Composite material has been very popular, and the performance will increase throughout the life span of the bat. The more you use composite material, the better performing the material will become. If you are looking for a very high quality bat with powerful composite material, I would probably suggest taking a look at the 2014 Louisville Slugger Xeno: (FPXN14-RR). This model has been extremely popular and will be able to create a lot of good pop because it incorporates Pure 360 composite. The balanced weight distribution will also make it easy to generate a fast bat speed.
Merritt
What is the difference between the Mendoza 2014 and 2013 Mendoza bats? mike
The 2014 Louisville Slugger Mendoza Fastpitch (FPMD14-RR) and the 2013 Mendoza are the same bat except for the paint/color scheme.
Jason
My daughter has just started playing softball and we are looking to purchase her first bat. She is 11 yrs old 5'2" weighs 95 lbs. Is this a good bat for her and what size is recommended? chuck
The 2014 Louisville Slugger Mendoza Fastpitch (FPMD14-RR) would be a great first bat for your daughter. I would recommend a 32" bat.
Bobby
How is this "composite" different than your more expensive composites? Seems like the really expensive composites are -9, -10 or -11. The -13's seem cheaper making me think they are a different composite type, kind of like buying an HDTV, is it 1080 or 720. How is this "composite" similar or different than your $200-$300 bat. Is there a good rule of thumb when looking at composite bats to let one know this? Seems all manufacturers have their own technology but no industry standard. Tim
The C1C composite in the 2014 Louisville Slugger Mendoza Fastpitch (FPMD14-RR) will not be Slugger's top of the line material. The LS-2X (Xeno) & Pure 360 (LXT) composite will be their highest quality. With bats you really get what you pay for. The higher priced composite bats will get you better durability and better performance over a longer period of time.
Brandon
My daughter is 9 yrs old, 55 inches tall and weighs 110. What length would you recommend? Lynn

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
