Description

The Next Generation of Hybrid Power - The Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS7160 is here! Although it features one of the lightest swing weights among all hybrid bats, the Select 716 is all about showing off its undeniable power potential. With the introduction of their bat line, players around the nation are finding out why so many elite Travel Baseball teams choose to step into the box with Louisville Slugger. Slugger made waves in the market with a never-before-seen 3-Piece bat construction, but the TRU3 Dynamic Socket Connection allows for slight movement between the barrel and handle to further maximize barrel trampoline effect and eliminate negative vibration. This hybrid design is composed of a 100% composite handle and a barrel made from extremely tough AC21 Alloy. That material blend allows Slugger to keep the barrel walls thin for maximum trampoline and an extended sweet spot without sacrificing any durability. The SLS7160 features a -10 length to weight ratio, 2 5/8" barrel diameter, a 7/8" standard handle, and the BPF 1.15 Performance Certification mark. Louisville Slugger is more than confident that they've created the best bat in baseball and they're backing it up with the 30-Day Performance Promise. "Best bat for the money" Eddie Cushing parent

Pros: My 9 year old grandson just moved up from a 28-18 bat to the SLS7160 30-20 and is absolutely crushing the ball. The TRU3 technology really works well, NO sting or vibration. He is hitting the ball further than he ever has before, thank you Louisville Slugger, you came through once again.

Cons: To me, the price is always going to be to high, but seeing my grandson hit with much more confidence, makes it worth the price.

LS Select 716 Pierce Baseball coach

Pros: My son is 10 years old and has been playing travel ball for two years. He hits for power and this bat fits perfect for his hitting style. Extreme pop and great feel. I like the two piece design, if the player hits the ball on the handle the bat gives immediate feed back because it will sound dead. If he hits the aluminum barrel solid the aluminum will sound off.

Cons: I gave the bat 3 stars on durability just because I have never owned a LS bat. Not sure what to expect.

Great Brand, Fantastic Bat. Coach Dad coach

Pros: Lizzard skin grips on a elite bat & I found the size my son needed on sale. I have a 916 2 3/4 & a 716 2 5/8 and to be honest I can't really tell the difference when watching my son hit. If you center a meatball up on the sweet spot with either one then look out, (you better have your glove ready). I have two sons, and I coach three teams. I have seen about every bat in the Youth big barrel & Senior league class from Marucci to Rawlings, Combat to Demarini, and Louisville Slugger to Easton. Every manufacture has similar bats, in similar materials and price points. Some come out of the wrapper hot and others need some time to break in. Just like some people prefer Chevy to Ford, I prefer Louisville Slugger over Easton.

Cons: These things are expensive. I have never had a single issue with a composite, or alloy bat from Louisville Slugger or Demarini for that matter. If you spend the money on these bats you need your child to take care of them. Do not use them in batting cages with cage balls. Do not use them if the temperature is under 55 degrees. If they are seeing pitch speeds over 40 mph you need to buy the Senior league bat.

I am trying to decide between the Omaha 516 and the Prime 916. Which is the better balanced bat with the lightest swing weight and which is the best performance for the money? RTP7
This 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS7160 is going to feature a slight end loaded swing weight so if you're looking for a balanced bat I would probably avoid this one. Out of the 516 and the 916, I would have to say that the 516 is going to feature a more balanced swing weight and offer you more bang for your buck.

Is this bat BBCOR Jr Little League certified? BCav
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS7160 is approved for use in the Junior League division of Little League as this bat features a 2 5/8 inch barrel diameter. Since the barrel is comprised from AC21 alloy barrel this bat does not have to be BBCOR certified; which is the requirement for this division if the barrel is composite.

Looking for a new bat for my 13 year old son that plays travel ball. He only weighs just over 80 lbs so he would not be considered a power hitter. He has used different sizes of the Easton S3 (-10) for the past 3 years and is looking for something with a little more pop. Would you recommend the LS 716 or the 916? Jay
If you are looking for a bat with a two-piece, hybrid design (alloy barrel and composite) then I would definitely recommend looking to this 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLS7160). That being said, some individuals do feel that this bat can offer a little bit of an end-load and if you wanted more of a balanced feel, I might look towards the Prime 916 (and its two-piece, all-composite build). However, I might recommend looking to a little larger -8 model of bat as well. Getting a -10 may be a disadvantage for him when he moves into high school within the next couple years. In high school, he will have to swing a -3 bat and moving directly from a -10 to a -3 could make the transition difficult for him.
Ben
My 10 year old grandson is playing travel ball this year. Coach says step up to Big Barrel bat. In choosing a barrel, is there any advantage to 2 5/8 over 2 3/4 other than obvious size? Gable112
Other than the 2 3/4" barrel being larger than the 2 5/8", there isn't a performance difference between the two. However, 2 3/4" barrels can have higher durability concerns than 2 5/8" models because the walls of the barrel are thinner, and once velocities start to reach around 50 mph or higher, they can have a higher risk of cracking/breaking and other issues than 2 5/8" barrels.

How does this bat compare to the Marucci Elite Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBE14? Which one would you recommend for a contact hitter? Slane21
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS7160 is very comparable to the Marucci Elite Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBE14, the main difference between the two is that the 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLS7160 has a slightly longer barrel and will have a stiffer fell than the Marucci Elite Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBE14
Sean
What bat does this replace from last year's models? What changes if any were made? Allen
This 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLS7160) was actually an older bat that was made for the 2016 season. It replaced the Select 715 that was made for the 2015 season. The biggest difference that was made from the Select 715 to this Select 716 was a slight cosmetic change.
Ben
My son 12 yr old son is 5'8", 140 lbs and hits with power. Is this bat ideal for him? Derek
Based upon your player's height and weight, I would recommend maybe looking for a bat that has a heavier drop on it. Maybe consider thinking about a -5 bat or -8 bat. I think that this 2016 Louisville Slugger Select 716 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLS7160) with a -10 length-to-weight ratio will be a little light for use and if your player swung something heavier, he might produce more power. I would think about looking at a 32" bat with a -8 length-to-weight ratio on it.

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
