I think that the 2017 Marucci CAT 7 BBCOR Baseball Bat: MCBC7 is going to be very comparable to the Marucci CAT 6 BBCOR Baseball Bat: MCBC614 but due to the new aluminum that they use it should be more responsive. I think all three are very good bats and picking the right one has a lot to do with personal preference because they are all going to be very similar. The Maruccis do have a little be of an advantage in the reviews from JustBats.com customers.

This 2017 Marucci CAT 7 BBCOR Baseball Bat (MCBC7) will come with a one-piece, all-alloy build to it which will result in a balanced swing weight on the bat. The Prime 917 will differ as it has a two-piece design and an all-composite build. As well, the Prime 917 will have a pretty balanced feel to it. Both bats could be used by any style of hitter. The big difference between the two bats will come from the feel the bats produce at contact with the ball. This Cat 7 provides a more stiff feel at contact while the Prime 916 will feature more flex. When deciding on a bat, you'll need to decide on the feel that your prefer at contact with the ball.

All three are going to be very good options. Currently the DeMarini CF8 is not available and it has been sold out for a decent amount of time. The Easton Z Core and the 2017 Marucci CAT 7 BBCOR Baseball Bat: MCBC7 are going to be very similar bats. They are both going to be really good options. The Marucci Cat 7 is actually going to be an improved option from the Marucci Cat 6, which was one of our best rated bats ever. The 2017 Marucci CAT 7 BBCOR Baseball Bat (MCBC7) is going to perform a little bit more highly than the Marucci CAT 6 BBCOR (MCBC614). This is due to the AZ4X Alloy used in the CAT 7. It is going to be stronger and more responsive than the aluminum used in the CAT 6. The barrel has also been redesigned on the CAT 7 and is going to have a much larger sweet spot. Marucci does not release a new version of the CAT series every single year so when they do release a new version, a lot of time and research went into designing the new bat.

Based upon his height and weight at this current time, my general recommendation would be to get this 2017 Marucci CAT 7 BBCOR Baseball Bat (MCBC7) in the 31" length as long as you feel that the 28 oz weight will be beneficial for him. However, if you want something that can be used more long term, the 32" size would be best. The decision will come down to whether you want the most optimal bat for right now or if you want to get something that can be used more in the future (and save you some money by not having to buy another bat next year).

The CAT 7 I would suggest for you is the MSBYC78 which can be bought in the 30"/22 oz size and is meant for use with kid pitch baseball. The standards for USSSA and BBCOR are different, so you actually won't find a bat that is 1.15 BPF certified for USSSA and allowed for high school play. Most USSSA leagues still allow BBCOR bats however, as the BBCOR standard is lower than USSSA's, but you will have to check with your league rules to be sure. The Marucci Cat 7 is a very good performing BBCOR model, however, and one of the best performers this year.

It will be a large change regardless of what size you choose since you are jumping from a -10 to a -3. We generally recommend players using a -5 or -8 a year before high school just to lessen that jump. I think both a 31" or a 32" would work for a BBCOR model, and it would be mostly down to personal preference.

The Marucci Cat 8 (MCBC8) is a new release, so we don't have full information just yet when it comes to a high number of reviews, but early indications seem to show that the alloy used in the Cat 8 are an improvement over the 2017 Marucci Cat 7 (MCBC7). The jump to BBCOR is certainly an adjustment period for most players, since BBCOR models will not have the pop that USSSA models do, along with the extra weight of the bat with it being a -3.
