Yes the 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBYC78 will be very similar to the 2016 CAT 6 Senior League Baseball Bat. They are both going to be very balanced bats. The main difference is the Cat 7 will have a little big bigger barrel and a new and improved aluminum, the AZ4X Alloy.

A -8 length to weight ratio will be 2 ounces heavier than a -10. It will depend on a player's personal strength, but typically the 2 ounce difference is not drastically noticeable. Generally, 11-13 year old players use a -8 length to weight ratio.

Based upon your player's height and weight, I would make a general recommendation of getting a bat in the 29" length. This bat won't have a 2 3/4" barrel diameter. The diameter will be a little smaller at 2 5/8". If you were interested in this bat, I would note that it is going to feature a -8 length-to-weight ratio, which would cause a 29" bat to have a 21 oz weight to it. If you were okay with a 2 5/8" barrel diameter and your player could handle the 21 oz weight of the 29" model, this 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat (MSBYC78) would be a bat to consider.

Based upon your player's height and weight, I would make a general recommendation that you guys get a 32" model of this 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat (MSBYC78) as long as you feel that you can handle the resulting 24 oz weight. If you were comparing this bat, the Prime 916 (SLP9168) and the Select 716; I would recommend either this CAT 7 or the Prime 916. The reason I would suggest those two bats is because they both are made in the -8 length-to-weight ratio and the Select 716 is not made in the -8 length-to-weight ratio. Both this CAT 7 and the Prime 916 are great bats and your decision may come down to the style of bat you prefer the most: the one-piece, all-alloy design of the CAT 7 or the two-piece, all-composite design of the Prime 916.

Since your son is only 11 we would not recommend the 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBYC78 as this bat is a drop 8 and is typically better suited for a player who is in 7th grade. For a player who is 11, a drop 10 bat is a better fit. Since the CAT 7 is not featured in a drop 10 model one would need to consider other options.

We would recommend a 30" bat based on his height and weight, although you could go up or down 1" depending on things like his strength, how far he stands from the plate, whether he chokes up or not, etc. We can't recommend the weight of the bat because we haven't seen him swing and don't know other things like his strength, etc.

The 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat (MSBYC78) has been one of the best reviewed bats around. The Cat 7, as well as the Cat 6 and 5, have received many great reviews. It is actually one of our best reviewed bats on the website. It is a very popular bat and a very high performing bat. It is going to be a different bat than the Mako or the Omen through. Both the Omen and the Mako are going to feature two piece fully composite designs one the Cat 7 features a one piece fully aluminum design. It will have a much stiffer feel than the Omen or the Mako. Performance wise all of these are going to be relatively comparable.

Based on your players height and weight, we would recommend getting a 28 inch model. The 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBYC78 is a -8 length to weight ratio and for someone that is playing 10U it would be too heavy (generally recommend a drop 8 bat for someone in 7th grade). For a 10U player it is best to get either a 28/16 or 28/18 as these sizes would be easier for the player to handle; my suggestion would be 28/16.

It all depends on what the player's most previous weight of bat was. If he was using a -10 bat most recently and not having any issues with the weight (say 21 ounces) then it could be conceivable that a 31/23 would work for him. Based on his height and weight alone, we would recommend the 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBYC78 in a 31 inch model.

It has a 2 5/8" barrel diameter, alloy barrel material and USSSA 1.15 BPF certification. Those features would allow it for use in the 50/70 division this year. However, this bat will not be legal in Little League baseball when 2018 begins. The reason is because in 2018, Little League is requiring bats to feature USABat certification and this bat will not have that certification.

Based upon your player's height and weight, I would make a general recommendation of getting this 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat (MSBYC78) in the 30" length. As long as you feel that he can handle the 22 oz weight of that 30" bat, I think this CAT 7 will be just fine for use. As well, I think going with a -8 will be advantageous as it will give him something he can grow with for a longer period of time (if you are feeling comfortable, I might even consider the 31" bat).

At connection the feel will be different on the bats as the CF8 will offer quite a bit of barrel flex and the CAT 7's barrel will be stiffer. Neither feature is more advantageous, it just comes down to the player's preference. For your player, I definitely think he is ready to swing the 32"/24 oz size of this Cat 7.

It would be hard to compare these two bats as the 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBYC78 is a one-piece all alloy model while the DeMarini Voodoo is a hybrid design (alloy barrel and composite handle). The DeMarini Voodoo will certainly be better equipped to reduce vibration from off-centered hits while the Marucci will potentially offer more power with the stiffer, one-piece design as well as extra ounce (-8 compared to a -9 with the Voodoo).

The weight of a bat is based on the player preference. A -8 could be too heavy. However, if he thinks that -8 size is easy to swing, it will prep him for the leagues to come in the future. if he feels ready to swing a 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat (MSBYC78), he should be okay.

This 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat (MSBYC78) is indeed USSSA approved. It will be good for all levels of USSSA play in 2018 except for 14U (in 14U, it will be required to swing -5 USSSA bat or a -3 BBCOR bat). That being said, this bat will not conform to the new USABat certification rules that are being implemented in 2018 for Little League, Dixie, Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken, Pony, DIzzy Dean and AABC.

The difference in weight can be a jump. However, he will eventually have to adjust to a -3 when he gets to high school and college. I think that going to drop 8 will be good idea. If you guys got the 2018 Easton Ghost X -10 USA Baseball Bat (YBB18GX10) in the 28"/18 oz size and it feeling a little heavy, my first suggestion might be to choke up on the bat for the current time being while he gets used to the bat. Choking-up will make the bat feel lighter for him. However, if you feel that he needs something with a larger length-to-weight ratio, I might recommend looking for a bat with USA certification and -11 length-to-weight ratio.

At 13 years old, I would recommend looking to something a little heavier than a 30"/20 oz bat. Both are great bats. If you are a power hitter, the XL3 would be the better bat due to it being end loaded. If you are a contact hitter and prefer a balanced bat, the 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat (MSBYC78) would be the better bat.

Unfortunately, the 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBYC78 will not be allowed for play in Babe Ruth in 2018. The 13 year old division will require the bat to be either USA certified or BBCOR certified and this bat is neither.

However, the tapered grip will not add a performance edge to a bat. It just offers a new feel on the grip of the bat for a player.
