I play in Pony League and I was wondering if USA bats are required for the 2019 season?

Yes, if you are in Pony League you would be required to swing a USA bat in 2019. The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 is one such option that could be used.

My son has the Axe Elite and I am looking for a little lighter drop for a 31 inch bat with good pop that he can use against faster pitchers. I was also looking at the Beast X -8.

The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 would be a great option for a player up to 11 years of age. If you are also looking into a -8 Easton Beast X, we would recommend this bat for a stronger 12 year old or someone in middle school.

My son is 6 years old and beginning his first year in coach pitch. He is 52 inches tall and 57 pounds. He's tall and thin. Do you feel the 28 inch 17 oz is too heavy for a child his age and size?

No, I think getting a 28'' in the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 would be a good choice based on his height and weight. He made have to adjust to the weight a bit, but the Solo 618 is well balanced and should help with this process.

My son is 6 and about 45 lbs. Right now, we are using a Rawlings 5150 in a 27/16, but I've heard great reviews on the 618. Would a 28/17 be too big for him? Currently he is 24/19 in his machine pitch 8U league.

Based on your son's age, a 27'' is the recommended size. However, he could move up to the 28'' in the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 if he is handling the 27'' bat you currently have now well. His height and weight, can also be used to give us a better idea of if a 28'' will be too big. You can find the correct size based on his height and weight here: https://www.justbats.com/bat-coach/.

I have a 10 year old that is at 75-80 lbs. He is moving from Pony to Midgets. We were using a 28" HyperLite. He hates the sting and performance. Should I choose a 29", Solo 618. I saw you said we should go to a -10 bat. I love the Omaha, but it isn't available in the size we want. Thoughts?

For most 10 year old players, we usually recommend a 29" bat. Since the Solo 618 in the 29" will weigh 18 oz, I think that that your player should be able to handle this bat. I think you guys would be just fine going with the Solo 618 and I think you guys will enjoy the Solo 618 as it is one of the best USA bats out there right now.

Based on your son's height and weight, I would recommend getting the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 in a 30''.

Will this bat be available in a 26 or 27 inch eventually?

Given how late we are into the bat production timeline, I would highly doubt that the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 will be manufactured in any other size. If you were needing a 27" bat, I recommend checking out the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -10 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBO518B10.

I have a 7.5 year old finishing up spring ball and I want to go ahead and get him a bat for spring of next year. He is 50" tall and roughly 60lbs. Would you recommend the 29"?

Per your son's height and weight, we would recommend getting the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 in a 28 inch model. Getting a 29 inch bat is certainly not out of the question if you feel it would be more beneficial for your son.

The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 is a well balanced bat and would be a good choice. However, based on his age and size I would recommend getting a -10 or a -8 bat.

The max barrel diameter is 2 5/8". I know there is a significant difference in how many inches of maximum diameter you get between the 28" and 29" version of this bat. Can you tell me how much of a difference there is between the 29" and 30"? Do you get an extra inch of max barrel diameter?

As far as we know, there is roughly a one inch difference in the barrel of the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 if comparing a 29" to a 30" model.

I just purchased a DeMarini Voodoo ONE 28-18 and weighed it after my son said it was heavy. It weighed 21 oz. So my question is has anyone weighed the LS Solo 618 bats and is there a difference?

The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 will weigh roughly 1 ounce more than the listed weight. With the vast majority of the -11 and -10 USA bats, we have seen an average weight of 1.5 ounces above that which is listed on the bat.

How is this bat different from the Omaha? Other than one is a drop 10 and this one a drop 11.

The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 will feature a different alloy but the main difference, besides the weight, is the composite end cap that is being used. This gives the Solo 618 a more balanced swing weight throughout the entire barrel; think of it like the cupping of a wood bat, this takes a little weight out of the end.

My nephew is 11 years old, and about 70 lbs. Will the 32" 21 oz. Solo be too heavy for him, or just right?

Typically at your player's age, I would suggest a size of about 30" and 20 ounces, so a 32" 21 ounce 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 may be a bit heavy.

Yes, the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 in the 30"/19 ounce size would be a great option for an 8 year old.

Hi, my son is 11, weighs 80 lbs & is about 4’9". We are deciding between the Omaha -10 & the Solo 618 -11. I’ve read the previous responses & it seems the Solo has been recommended more for younger players 10 & under because the Solo will be too light of a bat to make the transition up to -3. I know based on his height/weight a 30" is probably what he should swing but if he likes the feel of the Solo in a 31" vs the Omaha in a 30", would that be suitable since they’d actually weigh the same?

That would work fine, yes. In the end personal preference and comfort with a bat will always mean more than what the charts tell you, so if he likes the 31" Louisville Slugger Solo -11 and it works for his swing then you can certainly go with that model and size.

I see the 28 inch is out of stock- do you know when more will be available? Or can you recommend a bat that is similar? I am looking for a 28"/17 oz for my son- he's 8 and 58 lbs.

We are hoping to receive more of these in 2-3 weeks, but we have not been given a date by Louisville Slugger, than is just an optimistic estimation. I would look at the 2018 DeMarini Voodoo One -10 USA as the closest thing to this model that we have right now.

My grandson is 8 years old, he weighs 90 lbs and is 4’2". Which length bat would you recommend? I bought the Solo 618 in a 30” but I’m afraid it will be too big. Will it be too big?

By our sizing chart, a 29" would be the recommended/most popular size for his height and weight. However these guidelines are only meant to put people in the right ballpark, and come with a +/- of 1" typically, so a 30" might work for him.

My son is 10 years old and is 4'8" tall and weighs 78 pounds. What size would you recommend for this bat? Also, what is the true weight of this bat? For example, is the 18 oz bat really an 18.5 oz bat or 19 oz bat or even heavier?

Based on your son's height and weight, we would recommend getting the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 in a 29 inch model. As for the true weight of this bat, these models tend to run 1 ounce heavier than listed weight.

Which USA bat would you recommend for a power hitting 9U player with an already fast swing? This 618?

I would recommend taking a look at the 2018 Louisville Slugger Select 718 -10 USA (WTLUBS718B10). It has a slight end-loaded swing weight designed to appeal to power hitters.

Kyle J. Expert ·Mar 02, 2018

144973

I hear USA bats weigh heavy. Can you give me the actual weight for a 28"/17 oz before I buy?

Almost all bats (USA or not) will weight about .5-1.5 oz heavier than the listed weight as manufacturers do not include things like the adhesive glue for the endcap and grip tape into the final weight. This variance also varies from model to model. We did weigh a 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 ourselves, and it was a 32"/21oz that weighed in at 22 oz, so +1 oz.

My son is 13 yrs old and is 5'9" and 129 lbs. What bat length should I buy? He also likes a lighter bat for bat speed. Is this the best bat for bat speed?

Based on your son's height and weight, we would recommend getting the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 in a 32 inch model. Unfortunately this bat would not be a good option for a 13 year old player; this bat is better served for a player 11 and under. A better option would be the 2018 Louisville Slugger Select 718 -5 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS718B5.

Both the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 and the 2018 DeMarini Voodoo One -10 USA Baseball Bat: WTDXUO2 feature similar one piece aluminum designs. I'm a torn between the Louisville Slugger Solo 618, the Easton Beast X Hyperlite and the Louisville Slugger Omaha 518. What would you recommend? He's 4 foot 2 inches tall and weighs about 50 to 55 pounds give or take, and is a contact hitter.

All of these bats should perform relatively similar, and all will be one-piece alloy designs. The Solo 618 has been a great seller so far for USA bats, but because of that they are hard to find right now as Louisville Slugger is having trouble keeping up with the demand. The Easton Beast X Hyperlite and the Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 should also perform very well. I don't think you could go wrong with either choice.

My son is 5', 110 lbs and is 10 years old. Hit with a 31" -10 VELO very well. Will the Solo 618 be similar or will the -11 be too light?

The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 is a very balanced one-piece alloy bat that features a composite end cap. This design is very similar to that of the VELO. With that said, if the player was having success with a -10 model then it does not make sense to decrease the weight and use a -11. A good -10 USA bat to consider is the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -10 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBO518B10. Another one-piece alloy bat with a balanced swing weight but it does not feature the composite end cap.

My son is 9 years old, 4’7” and about 70 pounds. I’m going back and forth on the 29”/18 oz and the 30”/19 oz. Which one would you recommend?

Based on your son's height and weight, I think he would be able to manage either the 29"/18 oz or the 30"/19 oz 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat (WTLUBS618B11). He would likely be more comfortable with the 29" this season but he could always choke up on the 30" while he grows into the larger size.

Based on your player's height and weight, a 29/18 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 would work for your player. However, a 30/19 would be a bit better suited for his size.

The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 is better suited for players 11 and under (9-11 years of age ideally). For a player that is 12 the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -10 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBO518B10 in a 30 inch model would be more ideal.

My son is almost 9. He's 4'7" and just over 70lbs. What size should he get? Thinking 30 inch, but he was using a 28 inch drop 11 last year.

At your player's current height and weight, I would suggest a 29" bat. However, if you expect just a couple inches of growth by your player, a 30" 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 would be the suggested length.

Logan Expert ·Feb 09, 2018

144348

My son is 12, 4'10" and weighs 75 lbs. Thinking the 31", but is 31" too much?

Based upon your player's height and weight, I would make a general recommendation of getting a 30" length of bat. However, that is not a rule that he has to go with the 30" length. If he feels ready for a 31" length, it is fine to get a bat of that length. However, for a 12 year old player, I would not recommend a bat like this 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat (WTLUBS618B11) with a -11 length-to-weight ratio. At the minimum, I would recommend a -10 sized bat and my suggestion would be to consider a -8 sized bat so your player can prep for using the -3 BBCOR bats when he gets to high school in a couple years.

For someone of your player's height and weight, we would recommend getting the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 in a 28 inch model.

Is this truly a Drop -11? I’ve heard that the USA bats are heavier than the listed weight. Is that the case with this bat? Thanks!

Typically bats range about 0.5-1.5oz. heavier than their listed weight. This is because of the additions to the bat following the weigh-in process (ie. grip, paint, etc.) The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 is no exception. This is not just for USA bats though, as this has been the case for all bats for some time now.

I would like to buy my 10 year old a LS bat as he has always had LS bats. What is the basic difference between the Omaha 518, the Solo 618, and the new 718, besides the fact that the 718 is a hybrid?

The 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -10 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBO518B10 is a one-piece aluminum bat with ST 7U1+ alloy construction to provide a traditionally stiff feel on contact. The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 will also be one-piece aluminum, but it also utilizes a speed ballistic composite end cap to help balance the swing weight to feel lighter. The USA Solo 618 is also only available in the -11 size. The 2018 Louisville Slugger Select 718 -10 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS718B10 is a hybrid bat with the same ST 7U1+ alloy construction as the 518 but it also takes advantage of the TRU3 technology to create a substantially smoother feel on contact than either of the other two options. All in all, any of these three (3) bats will offer your player a high quality performance.

My son has always liked LS bats, and I intend to get the Solo 618 -11. He is 4'7" and 76 lbs. What bat length is should I buy? I also like a lighter bat for bat speed. Is this the best bat for bat speed?

Yes, the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 is a great option for bat speed. Based on his height and weight we would recommend a 29"/18 ounce bat for him.

My son is 4'6" and only 55 pounds. What size and type of new USA Bat would you recommend?

Based on your player's height and weight, we would recommend getting the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 in a 29 inch model. This model from LS features a one-piece alloy design with a balanced swing weight making it an ideal bat for players ages 9-11.

Normally the barrel is the same width where as the solo's barrel gradually gets bigger. The last 2-3 inches of the bat are the same width. Why is that? Does this make it even tougher to hit the sweet spot?

Yes, the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 has a gradually increasing barrel but that does not effect the sweet spot or production. Overall, this bat is built with the intent to increase the players swing speed and improve control through the swing zone.

Is this a better bat than the Easton Ghost X Hyperlite -11?

Considering both the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat (WTLUBS618B11) and the Easton Ghost are part of the first USA approved bats, it's really hard to say which is better than the other. At this point, since we haven't seen these bats go through an entire season, it comes down to your preference in brand/bat makeup. The Solo 618 is a one-piece aluminum alloy while the Easton Ghost X is a one-piece composite bat.

Which bat do you recommend for 10U Baseball, the Louisville Slugger Solo 618 or the Easton Beast X Hyperlite? Why?

I personally prefer the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 as it is the first year of these USA bats and I'd rather not spend the high-end amount of money on a bat like the hyperlite without knowing that how these USA bats are going to perform yet.

Are the barrels all the same length on the Solo line? If you look at the Easton Ghost line, they all have the same barrel length, so a 29 inch has the same one as the 31 inch (added length is in the handle). On some bats, the length is taken out of the barrel, so a 29 inch has a smaller barrel than a 30 inch and so on. I am trying to find out what the case is with this Solo 618.

The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 will feature a 2 5/8 barrel diameter. The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 BBCOR Baseball Bat: WTLBBS618B3 will also feature a 2 5/8 barrel diameter. The only Solo bat that differs is the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -10 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLS618X10 which features a 2 3/4 barrel diameter.

Do you prefer the Solo 618 or the DeMarini Voodoo One?

At the time of your question, neither this 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat (WTLUBS618B11) nor the Voodoo ONE USA Bat have received many reviews. However, this Solo 618 comes with an alloy design that is topped off with a composite end-cap. This design makes the Solo 618 very balanced feeling. Due to the balanced feel on the Solo 618, I would recommend the Solo for use.

The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 has the USA Baseball Stamp so this bat is approved For Play In AABC, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken, Dixie Youth, Little League, & Pony. The 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -10 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518X10 is legal for USSSA play which typically is considered to be legal for travel ball tournaments.

What's the real difference between Solo and 5150? Can we try the bats first?

Unfortunately LS and Rawlings do not offer a trial period on their bats. Thus, if one purchased either the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 or 5150 and used it then it would not be eligible for return. As for the difference between the two bats, the bats are both one-piece alloy models with balanced swing weights. The main difference is the composite end cap that the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 features; this bat would stack up more with the Rawlings VELO.

Looking for a USA Baseball bat for a coach pitch league (preferably alloy and a drop of -11 or -12). How would you compare the Solo 618 to the Easton Beast X Hyperlite (-12) and Rawlings 5150 (-11)?

This 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat (WTLUBS618B11) will feature an all-alloy build (with a composite end-cap) and a -11 length to weight ratio. The initial reviews on this Solo 618 have been pretty solid. I would suggest this Solo 618 over the Rawlings 5150 -11 (US8511) as we do not have any reviews on the 5150 at this time. As well, I would bypass the Easton Beast X Hyperlite (-12) as it has the smaller 2 1/4" barrel diameter (unless the -12 length-to-weight ratio is a must-have).

What are the differences between the Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 and the Easton Ghost X -10. Which one is more balanced? Which one is better?

Both the 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 and the 2018 Easton Ghost X -10 USA Baseball Bat: YBB18GX10 will be balanced bats. However, the Ghost X will be a two piece fully composite bat compared to the Solo and its one-piece aluminum design.

My son is 11 and weighs 85-90 pounds and is 4'9". Is this a good bat for him?

The average 11 year old will use a drop 10 to a drop 8. The goal is a steady progression to a heavier bat to till they get to the BBCOR leagues. This is a great bat, but by 11 you should be swinging a drop 10 unless the player is on the smaller side.

My son tried out the Easton Ghost X Hyperlight -11, 29" and did not like it at all. Right now he is swinging an Easton Aluminum bat and I am looking for feedback around this bat. Does it have pop, do you have to hit the sweet spot for response (on the Ghost) this was the case.

The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 is a great quality bat with lots of pop.

I've noticed a significant variance in the listed weight vs actual on several of the USA bats. I am considering the VELO -11 or the Solo 618. How close are either to listed weight?

All bats will be around 1 to 1.5 ounces over the listed weight due to the process in making the bat. The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat (WTLUBS618B11) is about 1 ounce heavier where the velo is 1.5 ounces.

Please compare the Solo 618 -11 to the Easton Ghost X Hyperlite -11. Which would be best for an 8 year old contact hitter as opposed to a power hitter?

This 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat (WTLUBS618B11) is a mostly all-alloy bat (handle to barrel) and topped with a composite end-cap to create a balanced swing feel. The Ghost X Hyperlite is a one-piece, all-composite bat. Either bat would work well for an 8 year old contact hitter. However, I would give the edge to the Solo 618 in regard to being more balanced. Because of that, I would recommend the Solo 618.

Does this bat or the Rawlings Velo have a more balance swing weight?

The 2018 Louisville Slugger Solo 618 -11 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS618B11 and the Rawlings Velo are both extremely balanced. It is tough to say one is really more balanced than the other, as that can vary for each player. However, the Solo 618 and the Velo are typically considered the most balanced bats on the market.
