The end cap is more compact in the 918 and allows the barrel to extend more. The length is around .25 inch. This is also at the end which will not effect the play. The sweet spot will generally be the same. The main difference is the compact end cap.

It is our opinion that there will not be much, if any, performance difference between the 2018 Louisville Slugger Prime 918 BBCOR Baseball Bat: WTLBBP918B3 and the LS Prime 917. There is a new end cap design on the 918 which will slightly enhance the overall swing weight and balance of the bat.

Based upon your player's height and weight, I would make a general recommendation of looking for a BBCOR bat in the 31" length. The biggest difference that will exist between 1, 2 and 3 piece bats will be the feel at contact. A 1-piece bat will feature a really stiff feel when you make contact with a baseball. A 2-piece or 3-piece bat (like this 2018 Louisville Slugger Prime 918 BBCOR Baseball Bat: WTLBBP918B3) will feature a considerable amount of flex when hitting a baseball (the flex feel between the 2 and 3-piece bat will be pretty much the same). Any type of hitter could use a 1, 2 or 3 piece bat; it will just come down to their personal preferences in a bat as there will be no inherent advantage to having one style over the other style.

Making the step to a BBCOR bat is always challenging. If he is swinging early with a 32"/29oz bat, a 33" may be the solution. It will slow down his swing speed a little bit until he gets adjusted to the weight. As far as the 917 and 918 go, they are very similar. The biggest difference between the two are the cosmetics. If your player likes the 917, he will also like the 918.

There is not anything out there from a BBCOR perspective that has significantly more performance capabilities. Rather BBCOR bats are more about feel (balanced versus end-loaded) and vibration control (one-piece bats are stiffer and replicate wood better while two-piece bats give you more whip and reduce stinging from off-centered hits). The 2018 Louisville Slugger Prime 918 BBCOR Baseball Bat: WTLBBP918B3 is a well balanced bat offering a two-piece composite construction. If a player were to get jammed or hit a ball off the end cap they would feel little to no vibration. Whether or not to switch from the Marucci CAT 7 Connect would be strictly feel.

Unfortunately it's hard to give an exact answer on the lifespan of a bat because it depends on the amount of use. If you play spring and summer baseball with normal use (say 1-2 practices/hitting sessions a week and games), I would anticipate getting at least a full year or two out of this bat, just like any other model.

Unfortunately the "feel" of a bat varies from player to player, so we can't really make a definitive statement about that quality of a bat. The Louisville Slugger Prime 918 should compare very similarly to the Rawlings Quatro in that they are both multi-piece, fully composite designs that allow for a good amount of flex during the swing to reduce vibration on mishits. The Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 is a one-piece, full alloy design to allow a stiffer feeling swing.

The rubber piece is essentially a buffer and will help further reduce the sting or vibration a player would feel from an off-centered hit. Yes, we highly recommend a break-in period before game use since this is a composite bat. We generally recommend 100-200 swings off a tee or soft toss, rotating the bat 1/4" each swing to get a nice break-in all around the barrel on composite bats.

Yes, that actually is somewhat normal for all bats. Manufacturers use an adhesive glue to secure the end cap onto bats, and over time a small piece of the excess glue can flake off and sound like a very small pebble. Sometimes this happens after 100 swings, sometimes after 1000, but it happens to almost any bat eventually. As long as you aren't seeing any performance issues, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.
After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.
The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.
The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.
