Ok for the money Robert DV parent

Pros: Lighter, cheaper, looks

Cons: Only one piece so weight distribution a bit different and more vibration that a two piece. It is also a bit loud as many Rawlings bats are.

Heavy Bat Dan Thomson coach

Pros: None

Cons: Bought a 29" 18 oz. bat. It felt heavy to my son so I got a scale out to weigh it and found that it actually weighed 20.35 oz. I checked 3 other bats and none were greater that 0.30 oz. above their 'stated weight' (probably due to weight of the grip). Buyer beware!

Rawlings 2018 USA 5150 -11 review djz parent

Pros: My 11 year old son hits just as hard and far with this bat as his 2017 mako power brigade. He loves this bat, light and sweat spot goes from end to the w on rawlings. Hard to tell from images but barrel tapers down from 2 5/8 at end to letter I. We have hit 100 balls off tee and 100 pitch with no issues Nice ping sound when hit on sweat spot and no vibration when ball is hit correctly.

Cons: none

Little Better Than Middle Of The Road Bobby Regan parent

Pros: My 8 year old son had to get this bat due to the new rule requiring USA bats be used in his league. We've been hitting with it in 50 degree weather and the vibration is not too bad. It hits ok compared to his other bat but has a cheap sound on contact. The ball jumps off the bat comparable to wood bats. Overall, it is an acceptable bat, but not even close to being worth $100. This is a $50 bat that has been up-priced because of the new USA stamp rule. The USA bats (all of them) have been deadend to reduce the risk of hot hit balls to the infielders, making a safer game for kids. I would be cautious of spending $300 on one of these bats...they don't have the pop of the older bats. This bat has a well-balanced feel making it easy to swing. I don't have a precision scale, but it does not feel too heavy (as some reviewers have claimed) - but, again, that is an unscientific assessment without a precision scale. The grip is outstanding. Good tack and good feel. The bat has a durable feel.

Cons: The sound on contact sounds like a cheap bat, but it hits ok. This bat tapers down quickly in that the maximum barrel dimension (2 5/8) runs for only a short span on the barrel. It begins to taper down after only a few inches leaving your player with little "maximum barrel diameter" to hit with. I understand that this had to be done in order to achieve the -11 drop and that is an acceptable tradeoff. Overall I would rate this bat as "acceptable +" or 3.5 stars.

typical USA bat Robert parent

Pros: son said it felt very comfortable and liked it initially

Cons: vinration!!! no pop!!! has minimal sweet spot!!! seems like the ball dies every time he hits with it, went from hitting solid line drive shots to mid outfield sometimes to the fence to hitting duds to the infield. changed bats bat to his old one and he started crushing again. complete waste of money but now we are stuck with it cause everyone knows its garbage.

Too Heavy Jim coach

Pros: Got my money back (no balls hit)

Cons: The 29/18 bat weighed 20.1 oz., a full 2 oz. over the stated weight making it a -9, not even close to -11. And it felt fairly end-loaded. I was looking for a lighter bat for more control and bat speed when facing faster pitchers. Sent it back right away.

Best option in price range Baseball Dad parent

Pros: Lightest 27" USA bat available at 16 oz. Best option for kids who have difficulty swinging level with heavier bats. Best option for bats in this price range.

Cons: Like all USA bats, the pop is significantly reduced. Like all USA bats we've tried, there is more "sting" present when balls aren't hit in sweet spot.

Another Baseball Dad

Pros: Good feel for my 9 yr old. Surprisingly in the store, my son liked the feel of the swing of this bat better than more expensive bats of similar size and weight. We used it once and he made more consistent contact than with other similar bats and his swing was faster and smoother (at least is seemed to be).

Cons: Unfortunately I can't recommend this bat because in that one 40 minute session of dad pitch with normal LL baseballs the bat dented 5 times! 4 were closer to the handle, but one was right in the middle of the sweet spot. I assumed that we just got a bad bat and it was replaced for free. However, after doing a little research (about 15 minutes) I found 5 other reviews stating basically the same thing.

good bat for money Little League coach coach

Pros: This bat has good balance. The weight is in the end of the bat creating good whip. I found it way more comfortable to swing than the Easton in this price range. Drawback is grip os riff and my son hurts his hands. Replace with new grip immediately and you have a great bat for the money. Our whole team bought this bat on my recommendation.

Cons: Grio5 is weird

Great Bat For The Money!!! Paul Smith coach

Pros: Great feel and the overall balance is not bad at all. My son loves it. He truly loves the way it grips in his hand. For the money spend, I think the bat is worth it. I've paid more for a bat with worst performance.

Cons: This bat has some hard vibration off a hit. Thus my son needing his batting gloves.

so far so good Nick parent

Pros: Bought two for my boys. So far so good, no game experience yet but from what ive seen in cages at practice and from what they told, we are all happy.

Cons: The weight....wish they made it in -12 or -13, but the more the boys use it. the more they will be able to swing it.

Pros: son is already pretty confident with this bat after 6 batting practices. His teammates also have liked trying out out as well. Good pop and no complaints of vibration like his previous bat. So far there has not been any noticeable performance difference between this bat and his Marucci cat7 drop 10.

2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat Coach Jim coach

Pros: Cheap and lots of good reviews in our league. Got this for my younger son since it's a drop 11 and he is new to baseball so I did not want to spend too much yet.... great aluminum bat for young entry level players.

Cons: Tapers up to a small barrel... but you can see that in a picture. Not a big fan of the grip but will replace that. His wood bat has more pop.

Bat heavier than stated weight Get it together Rawlings coach

Pros: None

Cons: Beware: 28/17 bat actually weighs 19 ounces not 17 ounces. The maximum barrel size (2-5/8) is very little before it begins to taper. Rawlings is aware that all of their bats weigh more than stated and blame it on the new USA bat standard. The Rawlings 5150 bat from last year (USSSA) is consistent with stated weight. Bat returned and very disappointed with Rawlings

Know this Shawn parent

Pros: One of the best USA bats. But you need to know they are heavier than advertised. This will affect bat speed and mechanics on smaller kids.

Cons: 27" Drop 11 (16oz), bat actually weighs 18 oz ! Be aware that all USA bats actual weight is more than the drop indicates. The closest we have been able to find to the advertised drop is the Easton 450, 27" 16oz, 21/4 barrell (17oz) and the Ghost X Hyperlight (17oz).

Ok bat i guess Leo J. parent

Pros: None

Cons: Purchased this bat because LS Solo 618 has been in back order FOREVER. My 9yr old is a bit smaller and needed a quicker bat. We purchased a 28/17. He intially said the bat felt pretty balanced when hitting off the tee and in the cage. The pop was average. However after a few sessions, we noticed the paint beginning to chip off the barrel. He also began to complain about vibration. Our season is about to start in 2 weeks, and here I am searching for an alternate bat.

Great USA bat RVJ123 parent

Pros: Good pop for a USA bat especially for coach pitch players. My 7 y/o was able to hit the ball farther than with he did with his Cat7 against slower pitching.

Cons: Like all aluminum bats it rings your hands against mis-hit balls, but Rawlings did a good job of keeping it to a minimum.

Guys? Fat dad parent

Pros: It is great for kids 7-9. Some of the kids are just learning to field. The pop is fine. My son can hit line drives and deep flys no problem. Used it in the cage 20 times and 5-6 games. No issues.

Cons: Paint came off pretty quick and grip as well. Good bat for the price. No one is going to the majors anytime soon so it great for beginners and intermediate players.

Pros: With our leagues USA bat rules, this bat seems to do the trick. Good balance and feel. My kids requested the same bat when it was time for a heavier bat, even after using numerous other bats.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Is the only difference between this bat and the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -10 just the drop? Is the quality of the alloy the same? I know in the past there was a difference in the Rawlings Youth 5150 and the senior league 5150. TONY
The difference between the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 and the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -10 USA Baseball Bat: US8510 will be the drop. Both bats use the same 5150 alloy with the pOp 2.0 technology. The -10 version will feature a significantly longer barrel compared to the -11.
Cameron
How is this bat against pitching machines? last few bats I bought, after a few balls they dented due to the bat wall being to thin. Concerned Dad
The 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat (US8511) has a wall about the same size as most other bats. If you are hitting the yellow dimpled balls, most bats will get dented. If you are hitting normal baseballs then it will be durable and have a long lifespan.
Mick
What is the actual weight of the 29/18 when weighed? BigDogMoney
The actual weight of the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 will be 1.9 ounces heavier than the listed weight.
Cameron
Does this bat need to be broken-in? My son will be 11 years old next season and he is 5 ft and 125 lbs, what size bat would you suggest? Cliff
The 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 is an all alloy bat and does not require a break in period. Based on the player's height and weight, we would recommend getting a 30 inch model.
Cameron
There's a 2018 Rawlings Prodigy -11 in stores with a 2 5/8" barrel. Is it the same bat? Mach5Motorsport
The 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 will not be the same bat as the Rawlings Prodigy you are seeing in the stores. Both of these bats feature the same type of construction with regards to a one-piece fully alloy model with a balanced swing weight. The difference is in the alloy material being used. The difference should lead the 5150 to have a more balanced feel.
Cameron
So just to clarify this bat can be used in Little League for all ages? daner
The 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 could be used in Little League by players of all ages minus the Senior Division (all bats at this level must be BBCOR).
Cameron
What size bat would you recommend for a kid that is 4 foot 6 inches and 66 pounds? He was using a 28 drop 11 and with the new USA bat rules I'm kind of clueless. Vandal03
Based on your player's height and weight, we would recommend getting the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 in a 29 inch model.
Cameron
Is the 27" too big for a 44" 45 lbs 5 year-old playing in machine-pitch Pony? Kevin
I would recommend the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 in a 27 inch length.
Dan
My son used the 5150 30/20 for 2 yrs and loved it! He's getting bigger & want to stay with the 5150 but can't find a 32 inch. Do you go above 31? Is this true, this 2 5/8 bat will be legal with Little League rules in 2018? Bubbs
The 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 will be legal for Little League in 2018 and we will only have the 31'' available.
Max
How does this bay compare to the Rawlings USA Prodigy? My son is 6 going to be 7 in April. He is 4 ft & weighs 60 lbs. What length & weight bat in the new USA standard would you recommend? MW
The 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 and their Prodigy model are both one-piece alloy bats with balanced swing weights. The 5150 will use a slightly higher grade of alloy to give the bat more balance and larger sweet spot. Both bats would be great selections for a soon to be 7 year old and, based on his height and weight, a 27 inch model would work best.
Cameron
What bat would you recommend for an 8 year old who is 54 1/4 inches tall and weighs 100 lbs? Hitter48
Factoring in your player's height and weight, as well as age, we would recommend getting the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 in a 30 inch model. Unfortunately with the USA bats there is not much else that will come in smaller in terms of length to weight ratio.
Cameron
Which bat is better: Rawlings 5150 or Easton Beast? Ricco
The 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 and the Easton Beast are both great bats. The biggest difference will be in the balance feel. The Easton Beast will have better overall balance.
Cameron
My son is 4 feet and 70 lbs., what should I go with: Rawling 5150 or the Easton S650? Also, should I go with a 27 in or a 28 in? Jortiz
Based on your players height and weight, I would suggest going with a 28" length. In regards to which of these bats you should go with, it would be dependent upon the weight of the bat your player would be comfortable swinging. At his size, I would say the -11 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 would be the better option at 28" 17 ounces. However, if your player can swing a 28" 19 ounce 2018 Easton S650 -9 USA Baseball Bat: YBB18S6509, that would be the route to go due to the added mass he could put behind the ball.
Logan
My son is 7 years old (8 in May) 4"3 55 pounds. He used a 28/16 2 1/4 USSSA bat and is swinging it well. With the new USA bats, what would be a good bat choice? Looking at the Rawlings 5150 or Louisville Omaha? Any recommendations on size and weight? Jay
At your player's height and weight, I would suggest sticking with the 28" length. At his age, the -11 length to weight ratio of the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 would be a little lighter option and possibly a better fit than the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -10 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBO518B10 at the -10 length to weight ratio.
Logan
Looking for good balance. My older son swung a Mako 30"/19 oz bat when he was 10 yrs old. He was fairly strong and well sized for his age. My 8 year old is 4'5" and 69 lbs. I think he will grow into the -11 this season. (1) What size for my younger son? (2) What about for my older son? Jay
(1) Based on your player's height and weight, we would make a general recommendation of getting a bat in the 29" length. However, if you felt more comfortable with a 28" bat, that would be fine as well. I would recommend considering this 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat (US8511) very highly in either the 28" or 29" size (sadly, we are out of stock of those sizes at the time of your question). (2) If your older son is 11-12 years old and swung a 30" length in the past, I would recommend a move to the 31" length. I think he would be able to move to a -10 bat or even maybe a -8 size if you feel he is ready. A -10 to consider is the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -10 USA Baseball Bat (US8510). A -8 to consider is the 2018 Rawlings Raptor -8 USA Baseball Bat (US8R8).
Ben
What size and weight should my 7 year old son use with this bat? He is 4" 09"" and weighs 53lbs. auburn fan
Based of the information you have provided, I would recommend the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 in a 28/17. I would also consider going with a youth bat if you think this will be too heavy for your player. The 2018 Easton S450 -12 USA Youth Baseball Bat: YSB18S450 in a 28/16 would be a good option.
Dan
Can we get an exact weight (real world) for the 29/18 model? Bert
The 29'' 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 weighs 19.3 oz.
Tori
Is the 2017 Rawlings 5150 26 inch -11 USA little league 2018 compliant (YBB7511)? We have the 2018 27 -11, but our kid is small. Thanks. Scott
The 2017 Rawlings 5150 is not USA certified for Little League play. However, the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 is USA certified and approved for play in AABC, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken, Dixie Youth, Little League, & Pony.
Dan
Picked up a Rawlings Prodigy 31 inch today at the local store, should I have held out for the 5150? Main difference? Also my kid is 5'2 120 lbs. Sup3rM1ke
The 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 and their Prodigy model are both one-piece alloy bats with balanced swing weights. The 5150 will use a slightly higher grade of alloy to give the bat more balance and larger sweet spot. Both bats are great selections and you cannot go wrong either way.
Carter
Does this bat come in a 26'? Dane
No, they do not make kid pitch bats with the USA certification stamp on them in a 26" size. 26" bats or shorter with the USA stamp will be tee ball bats.
Kyle J.
When do you expect this bat to be in stock in a 27 inch? Robbins
At this time we do not have an ETA on when we would get more 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 in stock in the 27 inch model (4/24/18).
Cameron
My son is very close to 4 ft tall and 50 pounds. What size would you recommend, 27 or 28 inch? Adam
Based on your player's height and weight, I would suggest a 27" USA bat. Unfortunately, we have sold out of the 27" 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511.
Logan
Can you use this bat as a 15 year old in Midget? Phil
You would not be able to use the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 as a 15 year old in Midget. At this age you want to use a BBCOR bat such as the 2018 Rawlings 5150 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB853.
Cameron
Do you have this bat available in a 30' 19 oz -11? It must be USA approved. melissa
Unfortunately, the only size we have left in the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 is a 31'' 20 oz.
Tori
My son is 4'5" and weighs 61lbs, wondering what size to get? John
With the size specs listed, the suggested size of the 2018 Rawlings 5150 -11 USA Baseball Bat: US8511 would be the 29" / 18 oz. option.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic, and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings's more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded, and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field-tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
